IOC ponders Jones medal dilemma

Disgraced athlete Marion Jones may have given back the medals she won at the Sydney Games in 2000 following , but the International Olympic Committee is still deciding what to do with those won by .

The Premier League table may show third and Arsenal first, but in financial terms the message from Stamford Bridge is that it is first, Chelsea second and trailing further behind.

A waiting game for the FA

was told he could not attend the first part of the Premier League meeting on Thursday last week when plans for the 39th overseas game were discussed.

This was the first time the FA's new independent chairman was to attend the meeting of the Premier League clubs, and the FA as a shareholder is entitled to attend such meetings.

I'm told that before the meeting Premier League officials told the FA that there was an item they wanted to discuss amongst themselves and for that the FA should not be present.

What next for the Premier League?

Fifa president Sepp Blatter's decision to on the Premier League’s plans for playing matches overseas may have been sudden - but it was telling.

When I spoke to him on Thursday it was in a hurriedly-arranged telephone call, but there was no mistaking the clarity and decisiveness with which he made clear that these plans would never be sanctioned by Fifa.

He added "as long as he is president" almost as an aside, but since he has no intention of retiring any time soon, that could be a very long time.

His other key comment was that the proposal would not help England's chances of staging the 2018 World Cup.

The Premier League's response to all this has been muted.

Premier League faces wait

The Premier League will have to wait before it gets a chance to meet football's world governing body Fifa and explain its idea for a 39th League match outside this country.

A letter from the league asking for a meeting arrived at Fifa's headquarters in Zurich on Wednesday.

But a highly-placed source told me that they cannot consider such a letter unless it comes via the Football Association.

Player ownership under the microscope

On Thursday morning, the 20 Premier League clubs will meet to debate third-party ownership of players. The freshly-drafted V20 rules have been drawn up to ensure that never again will the Premier League face the situation that emerged when back in the summer of 2006.

The rules, while debated on Thursday, will not be formally adopted until the summer meeting at the end of the season.

But that time lapse does not really matter.
