Pakistan's emotional farewell

  • Paresh Soni
  • 21 Mar 07, 10:49 PM

Paresh SoniKingston- This was a day of farewells, tears, sadness and anger.

Pakistan coach has been THE topic of conversation in these parts for more than 72 hours and the depth of feeling for the former Pakistan coach has been clear to see for all of us in this city.

It was evident again on a day his team promised and delivered a fitting tribute to the Englishman. Sadly, their best showing of the tournament, coming two games too late, was not witnessed by many of the supporters who had been present for the West Indies and Ireland defeats.

Pakistan fans paid tribute to WoolmerEven those who came for the crushing win over Zimbabwe had anger to express, such as Londoners Syed Shah and Omar Khan, who said they had 鈥渂een out here too long鈥 and were looking forward to flying back now.

Talha Khan, originally from Lahore but now studying in Atlanta, told me the team鈥檚 鈥渃omplacency鈥 was not what he expected 鈥渁fter spending so much to come here鈥.

The tears were provided by and last hurrah as captain.

The guard of honour his team-mates formed after his cameo innings was touching, particularly for Haseen Ahmed, who emigrated to Kingston from Pakistan 25 years ago.

Haseen was still staunchly behind his team despite their woes, saying: 鈥淵ou can鈥檛 pick and choose when to be a supporter.鈥

Sitting next to him was the Indian High Commissioner, KL Agrawal, backing his country鈥檚 neighbours because he couldn鈥檛 get to the matches he wanted to.

鈥淲e have a High Commissioner in Trinidad too (where India have been playing) and he鈥檚 been watching the games there.鈥

Pakistan also had the support of locals, with plenty telling me they were here to give Inzamam, a man they had great respect for, a hearty send-off.

None could match the devotion shown by Nadeem Mohammad Khan, from Long Island in New York, who flew in for and back from the opener against the Windies before returning for the Zimbabwe finale.

What about the Ireland game? 鈥淚 thought that would be a predictable win and didn鈥檛 think it was worth bothering,鈥 he said sheepishly.

Ah well, at least he wouldn鈥檛 be wasting any more money, right? Oh oh.

鈥淚 was so confident about our chances I bought tickets for the semi-finals,鈥 Nadeem added.

He and the others who came were rewarded with a breathtaking century from Imran Nazir, who crashed half of his team's total of 16 sixes.

Demoralised Zimbabwe hit some maximums of their own but their task was pretty hopeless even without the rain and Duckworth/Lewis calculations.

For Pakistan it was a positive note to end a depressing week and, appropriately enough, Inzamam had a hand in the final dismissal before another emotional walk off the field.

The celebrations were muted and that was no surprise after four traumatic days.

I really admire Pakistan and the dignity and respect of it's players. They have always been passionate about the sport and the way they embraced Bob Woolmer was something special.

The tragic circumstances around his untimely death is beyond sadness. My prayers are with his family and firends the team and all the supporters.

He was an ambassador and a legend in cricket. Inzaman also had a special place in cricket for me. A stalwart and a great player always beset by problems but walked out to bat or field in his nonchalant way but always inside ready to battle.

The world cup has shown heroes, winners and losers but will probably become the most remebered, in part for the wrong reasons. I hope from now until the final there is some stunning cricket and people around the world, press and fans will act with repsect to the game, its coaches, players and representatives around the globe.

Long live cricket, long live the memory of the late Bob Woolmer and I hope that Pakistan cricket can recover from its heartache and pain and play more of the cricket we have seen over the years.

As an Irish sports fan, we wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family, friends and colleagues of Bob Woolmer, whose death makes us all realise that cricket, just like all sport, is not the most important thing in life.
Sympathy to the Pakistan cricket fans also for losing their place and their coach. We wish you well in the future. Everything in life is cyclical and after you've had your 'downs' you will be succesful again. Success is almost impossible to maintain over a long period. Skill alone is not enough when the essential ingredients of focus and passion somehow inexplicably disappear without notice.
We in Ireland are just discovering cricket and are beginning to realise the scale of our team's achievements to date in their World Cup debut. We are now into the Super 8 of this World Cup!!! Let me reassure you that some good has come of Ireland's win over Pakistan. Cricket has found another 5 million followers here in this island of Ireland not to mention several more million among the Irish diaspora around the world.
The pressure on a great cricket team like Pakistan to achieve success is always immense and in this case it has taken its toll on the players and coach. No doubts there are also other issues like selection preferences etc., but pressure and stress generated by huge expectations can become an intolerable weight on the shoulders of a team. A negative and fearful attitude can sneak up on a team and suppress their ability to perform as they should with their great skills.
But please don't discount the great dedication, focus and passion of this Irish team and coach. Their performances were truly colossal.
Finally, we in Ireland wish the Pakistani team, country and people well in the future.

Bob Woolmer understood just how much passion and talent for cricket there is in Pakistan and that with such passion and talent Pakistan should be rolling the other big teams over on a regular basis.

The players have to bear some responsibility for the defeat to Ireland but let's not forget that the PCB has considerable responsibility for the state Pakistan cricket finds itself in. The Oval Test and the drugs issues have not shown the PCB in any light other than poor.

A clear out of the PCB is needed along with a new attitude of professionalism. Bob Woolmer recognised this. If players and administrators are only now realising this then their time is past.

World cricket needs a strong Pakistan team. Please ditch the infernal internal politics and let your talent do the talking! Remember which team it was who kept bringing the West Indies pace machine back down to earth during the 1980s? Certainly wasn't England...

Journey safely Bob, you were loved, respected and you will be missed.

Bob did so much for the Pakistani team. We will never forget him! Never!

My request to all, keep in mind that this is only a game. How can we judge legends like Inzi and Bob based on just a couple of games. The greatest hero for Pakistan Cricket (Imran Khan) could have faced exactly the same criticism, had Austrailia not beaten West Indies in 92 World Cup. On the contrary things could have been completely different if only the coin had fallen the other way during the Ireland match toss.

Just imagine these are the two incidents over which no Pakistani had any control, but one of them made Imran the greatest of the heroes, and other has humiliated Inzi in a worst possible manner.

We thank Inzi and Bob for what they have given to world cricket. They were simply brilliant in their own fields, and yet were very down to earth, nice chaps.

The saddest aspect of Bob Woolmer's death and the speculation that surrounds is that the hopefully untrue luried speculation is that it stems directly from the ICC and PCB treating of Pakistan as exempt from cricket law. This has been allowed to sully the death of an honourable man. It also casts continued doubt on the validity of results and the achievements of minor nations.

It is that the ICC craven handling of Inzamam al Haq's repeated violations of crickets mores together with the PCB support and indulgence of him, drug cheats and failure to properly punish those who refused to help in the match fixing enquiries.

Once graft becomes accepted as the norm freak happening (unexpected results, deaths, dropped catches, bizarre run outs) become viewed as suspicious.

In the end the question is this will Pakistan root out cheats like Asif and Shoaib. Will it ensure its captain and players behave with more dignity than at the Oval. How will they make people believe in the results Pakistan attain and crucially fail to attain whilst tainted players and ex-players are part of the PCB set-up?

Who will win this world cup? The best team? The team that tries to win it? The team that is allowed to win it? The ICC scraping everything under the carpet (graft, drugs, cheating and appalling behaviour) could leave the sport as damaged as Italian football. The saddest part is that the ICC seem to want it that way.

I wish we could have given you more in return during your time with us, but now that you're gone - there is only one thing we can give you - a promise never to forget. It's a promise we'll keep.

Inzi, our hero, our talisman.. When others fell, you stood proud. How can one forget your century against Bangladesh in Multan, guiding us to victory in what seemed destined to be a loss. But now was the time to go.

You have shouldered the responsibility of our exist, and as our leader, so you should. For this, you have my greatest respect. Thanks for the memories, the '92 worldcup, and the numerous run-outs.. we'll always love you.

And to Irish cricketers and fans everywhere, you're the green team now.. do us proud!

Pakistani team needs a complete uplift since none of the players with the exception of a couple are atheletic or have any understanding of a professional sportsman. Inzamam lacks the ability to motivate, lead or inspire the youth to perform. The team needs a person with a vision, who can inspire and be a strategist.

The world cup result is just an icing on the cake. Pakistani players need to go home and think and build themselves as a professional team.

Finally, the only person who is capable of overhauling the cricket in Pakistan without being challenged has stepped in a wrong profession, Politics. I believe the greatest gift that Imran Khan can give the country is a transparent and unique cricketing infrastructure, which can potentially bring the team on top and simple joy in the heart of millions of people in Pakistan.

We remember the days when he gave microphone to wasim before he goes to field to keep in touch which was declared unlawful later on but thats the way he was he was so dedicated to whatever he do.He lifted the team spirits very well. But no one would have thought of the way his journey ended. A great set back for pakistan cricket I think Inzi should not leave the team at this time they need him very badly we need him i know they are fighters and we will wait for the day Pakistsan bounce back and back with a bang Although we are Arch Rivals but we love to watch their cricket and we respect their bravery come-on Pak wake up you have alot of things to prove you have to prove it just do it for Bob it was his dream we all know that Bob will remain alive in the memories of circket fans forever may God rest his soul in peace.

But it's clear to see that the man was a one-off a true gentleman in all senses of the word in the murky world of Pakistani and world Cricket.

He wasn't a stranger to controversy having coached the Proteas (South Africa) whilst they involved with the bookmaker scandal in India.

But all i can say is he was calm when others were ruffled, he smiled when his player were down and he lended a warm arm to keep others up when their morale was down.

And above all he was humble in a world of shallowness and so called self professed "Superstars".

    Peace.

Pakistan has been and will be a great cricketing country, Inzamam had been a great player and Woolmer was a great couch. One game cannot change that!!

The intensity of emotions, be it rage or frustration, that we have observed in the last few days is what can be and should changed. It is so scary to find such extreme display of rage in failure as we have recently seen in Pakistan and India.
Should cricket or any other game for that matter, conjure up such destructive passion, it warrants some serious soul searching.

Bob Woolmer's death may give us the much needed wake-up call for cricket lovers.

As a Bangladeshi , I am novice as a supporter of national team in international arena, yet a veteran as an ardent fan of cricket since childhood. But somewhere along the line from cheering for Clive Lloyd鈥檚 team to Habibul Bashar鈥檚 team, I have been left with more passion and less fun. I think this is true for all fans in our subcontinent, especially the Indian and Pakistani supporters.

Bangladesh has a lot to learn not just in the game of cricket but also how to evolve as fans.
This is afterall a game, not war !!! And I think we have enough blood spilling in wars allover already, we do not need that from cricket too.
