Team of the tournament (so far)
I am writing this at - I have a little time to kill as I've just found out the flight to Guyana which was supposed to have been held for me has actually left and the next one isn't for seven hours!
But I am not moaning as it gives me an opportunity to engage in a favourite activity amongst cricket fans...it's time to pick a World XI - and this time I'm going for the 'Team of the Tournament so far'.
These teams are always highly subjective, but picking them is good fun. My criteria is to go for a side based purely on performances in the Caribbean and therefore I have only chosen from the teams which have qualified for the Super 8's. I've also tried to include a player from each team.
I have no doubt that the XI chosen will now suffer a downturn in their fortunes - but here goes.
Matthew Hayden (Australia)
Scored the fastest hundred in World Cup history and made Shaun Pollock, officially the world's best one-day bowler, look distinctly ordinary.
Jeremy Bray (Ireland)
Vital unbeaten century against Zimbabwe and runs against the West Indies.
Ricky Ponting (Australia)
Hundred against Scotland and fine knock in the win over South Africa. Probably the world's best one day and Test batsman.
Brian Lara (West Indies, captain)
A bit of a sentimental choice - I just love watching him bat ! But he has contributed in most of the West Indies' victories so far and he deserves to lead the side in his home World Cup.
Jacques Kallis (South Africa)
In some ways I'd prefer to pick the six sixes man, Herschelle Gibbs, but Kallis is the tournament's leading batsman so far and gives the team bowling options.
Kumar Sangakkara (Sri Lanka, wicket-keeper)
Consistent contributor with the bat so far with half centuries against Bermuda and Bangladesh - and he scores runs with style.
Paul Collingwood (England)
The team's "finisher" who already has a Man of the Match award. A great fielder and another bowling option.
Scott Styris (New Zealand)
A bit low in the batting order perhaps for a man who's scored heavily in the three wins by the Kiwis. Also a bowling option if required.
Brad Hogg (Australia)
He's not Shane Warne - but he's good enough. Helped to turn the match against South Africa with top order wickets, and he can score quickly as well.
Mashrafe Mortaza (Bangladesh)
A vital four wickets in the win over India and he can swing the bat as well - I saw him hit successive sixes to win a warm-up game against New Zealand in Barbados.
Lasith Malinga (Sri Lanka)
Malinga the Slinger has taken important wickets in each of the matches. He is an awkward bowler who no batsman enjoys facing.
12th man - Jacob Oram (New Zealand)
Any player who says he'd cut a finger off to play in the World Cup deserves a chance to be involved in this team!
So that's my "Team of the Tournament" so far. It's probably short of another specialist bowler but I reckon it would do OK - what do you reckon ?
