Ask Bearders #152
Welcome to the latest instalment of Ask Bearders, where you get the chance to pose a question to statistician Bill "The Bearded Wonder" Frindall.
What follows here is Bill's responses to some of the questions posed at the end of his last column, and if you want a question answered, leave at the end of this blog entry and Bill might answer it in his next piece.
Bill isn鈥檛 able to answer all of your questions, however. 大象传媒 Sport staff will choose a selection of them and send them to Bearders for him to answer.
Q: There have been plenty of fathers and sons who have both played Test cricket, but how many Australian pairings have there been?
Tom Robertson
Bearders鈥 answer: Australia has produced only one father and son pairing 鈥 E.J. (Ted) and S.E. (Syd) Gregory. They can also claim a grandfather (Vic Richardson) and his three grandsons (Ian, Greg and Trevor Chappell), plus ten braces of brothers (Archer, Bannerman, Benaud, Giffen, D.W. and E.J. Gregory, Harvey, McLeod, Trott, Trumble and the twin Waughs).
Q: What's the highest Test innings total with no batsman getting a century? India鈥檚 was 481 at Trent Bridge but there must be one higher than that.
Huw Morris
Bearders鈥 answer: The highest is India鈥檚 524 for 9 declared against New Zealand at Kanpur in 1976-77. The highest all out total without a century is 517 by South Africa against Australia at Adelaide in 1997-98. India鈥檚 recent 481 is the seventh highest.
Q: In a recent County Championship match at the Riverside (Durham v Hampshire), Michael Brown watched 19 wickets fall at the other end whilst batting for Hampshire. Is this a record in first-class cricket or has anyone carried their bat in both innings of the same match?
Robert Carr
Bearders鈥 answer: There have been at least six instances of batsmen carrying their bats throughout both completed innings of a first-class match, four of them in the County Championship:-
H.Jupp, Surrey v Yorkshire, The Oval, 1874
S.Kinneir, Warwicks v Leics, Leicester, 1907
C.J.B.Wood, Leics v Yorkshire, Bradford, 1911
V.M.Merchant, Indians v Lancs, Liverpool, 1936
S.J.Cook, Somerset v Notts, Nottingham, 1989
D.Sudhakar Reddy, Andhra v Kerala, Calicut, 1991-92
Q: In the recent Test match at Trent Bridge between England and India, Ryan Sidebottom took his Test batting average to 26.50, greater than his highest score of 26*. Are there any other instances of a Test player having a greater batting average than highest score?
David
Bearders鈥 answer: Given qualifications of eight innings (the same as Sidebottom has played to the start of The Oval Test) and an average of 10.00, there have been only two other batsmen whose average exceeds their highest score. Antao D鈥橲ouza (Pakistan) was dismissed only twice in 10 innings and averaged 38.00 with a highest score of 23 not out. S.G.Shinde of India was dismissed six times in 11 innings and averaged 14.17 with a best of 14.
Q: Has any batsman ever scored a century in both innings in his first Test match? I know that Paul Gibb of Yorkshire nearly did it by scoring 93 and 106 against South Africa in 1938.
David Backhouse
Bearders鈥 answer: Two batsmen have scored hundreds in each innings on Test debut: Lawrence Rowe scored 214 and 100 not out for West Indies v New Zealand at Kingston, Jamaica, in 1971-72, and Yasir Hamid made 170 and 105 for Pakistan v Bangladesh at Karachi in 2003-04.
Q: What is the highest Test match score made without boundaries? I have some cloudy memory about Graham Thorpe scoring a century with just one 4. I was wondering if that had been bettered?
Mark Webb
Bearders鈥 answer: The highest Test innings without a boundary is 77 by Geoffrey Boycott for England v Australia at Perth in 1978-79. I scored it and noted that although his innings included one four, it was all-run and included two runs from an overthrow. He batted for 454 minutes and faced 337 balls. Former Australian captain Lindsay Hassett remarked on air that it 鈥渨as an exceptional innings by someone who could not find the middle of the bat鈥.
Thorpe鈥檚 century against Pakistan at Lahore in 2000-01 was indeed composed of one four, seven threes, 12 twos and 51 singles and provides the only instance of a Test hundred with just one boundary.
Q: To carry on with your 鈥榳ho was born where鈥 questions started by our Devon friend (AB #151), have any Test cricketers come from Norfolk?
Darren Wiseman
Bearders鈥 answer: Four Test cricketers were born in Norfolk (place and date of birth in brackets): J.J. (John) Edrich (Blofield 21 Jun 1937); his cousin W.J. (鈥楤ill鈥) Edrich (Lingwood 26 Mar 1916); P.H. (Peter) Parfitt (Billingford 8 Dec 1936); and M.J. (Martin) Saggers (King鈥檚 Lynn 23 May 1972).
Q: After seeing the O'Brien brothers playing for Ireland in the World Cup, I was wondering which family holds the record for providing the most players for a Test match?
Tom Murphy
Bearders鈥 answer: The record of three brothers appearing together in a Test is shared between the Grace (E.M., G.F. and W.G., England v Australia, The Oval, 1880), Hearne (F. 鈥 South Africa 鈥 A. and G.G. 鈥 England 鈥 South Africa v England, Cape Town, 1891-92) and Mohammed families (Hanif, Mushtaq and Sadiq, Pakistan v New Zealand, Karachi, 1969-70).
Q: When last was a century scored before lunch on the opening day of a Test?
Brett
Bearders鈥 answer: On 30 October 1976, when Majid Khan completed his hundred off 74 balls in 113 minutes for Pakistan against New Zealand at Karachi. He was 108 not out at lunch and added just four more runs before being dismissed.
Q: What is the highest score by Indian batsman in an English domestic match?
Samraj Kundi
Bearders鈥 answer: Curious question! How about 333 by K.S.Duleepsinhji for Sussex v Northamptonshire at Hove in 1930?
Q: In #151 you discuss a Test cricketer from Egypt, Athanasios John Traicos, who played for South Africa in 1967-1970 and then for Zimbabwe in 1992-1993. How old was he when he played for Zimbabwe and who is the oldest player ever to play Test cricket? What is the longest spell of absence anyone has had between playing Test matches? Mr Traicos seems to have waited 22 years?
Chris Smith
Bearders鈥 answer: John Traicos was born on 17 May 1947 and was 45 years 304 days on his final day of Test cricket. That puts him in 13th place on the list of oldest Test cricketers. The oldest was Wilfred Rhodes, who ended his record longest career (30 years 315 days) when he was 52 years 165 days.
Traicos waited 22 years 222 days between appearances, almost five years longer than his nearest rival for that record, George Gunn (17 years 316 days).
Q: I play my club cricket for Chesterfield CC at Queen's Park, Derbyshire's second home. I just wondered if you had spent any time there watching county cricket and if so, do you have any particular memories of the place?
Joey
Bearders鈥 answer: I scored two matches on that lovely ground, one for 大象传媒 radio when Sussex were Derbyshire鈥檚 opponents in their 1969 Gillette Cup semi-final. The other was a Sunday league match that I scored for 大象传媒2 TV. The semi-final was a memorable match played on a rain-affected pitch on a wonderfully sunny day, before 11,000 spectators who filled the Park. Derbyshire mustered only 136 but bowled Sussex out for 49, with Peter Eyre taking 6 for 18.

who is the best warni or murli????
Complain about this postI'm confused, how can a player have an average higher than their highest score? surely even scoring exactly 26 in each of eight innings is still an average of 26!
Complain about this postOf England test starting XI's of the past which one/s contained the most players from a single county.
Complain about this postDear Mr Frindall, Thankyou and everyone on TMS for an excellent show
Complain about this postdoneBadThings,
When a batting average is counted up, you add up all of the runs as you would normally, but rather than dividing by all innings, the innings where you are not out at the end are disregarded.
For the sake of ease, say you are a (pretty rubbish..) number 11 batsman, with 1 run scored in each of your 10 innings. Now, if you were not out in 5 of those, your average would be 10/5, doubling your top score! If you manage to be not out at the end of all innings, you would have an infinite average...
Complain about this postTo doneBadThings.
A players average is worked out on the number of times they have been dismissed not their number of innings.
If a player scored 26 in each of their 8 innings and was not out in one of these innings then their average would be 29.71 - greater than their highest score.
Complain about this postFollowing on from the plethora of questions about cricketers from the same family, what is the most amount of brothers from one family that has played international cricket. I believe I am right in saying Arjuna Ranatunga had three much less famous brothers that all gained international honours at some stage. Is four brothers the record?
Complain about this postHello there,
I seem to remember Terrence Duffin being made captain of the Zimbabwe ODI team on his debut against Kenya. Is he the only debutant to captain his team when the team in question are not making their debut in international cricket (either Test or ODI)?
Complain about this postExtra runs (byes, Wide Balls, No Balls etc) make a small portion of the total runs in an inning. What is the largest number of extras in an inning? WHat was the final score?
Complain about this postThere was a Test Match in Pakistan in the early '70's when there were three batsmen dismissed for 99. Who were they and were there any centurians in that match ?
Complain about this postHi
Complain about this postI was wondering has any all-rounder ever scored a century and taken 10 wickets in a test.
Who has scored the most runs in test/ first-class cricket without hitting a six? Which bowler has bowled the most balls in test/ first-class cricket without conceding a six?
Complain about this postSurrey wrapped up their Test against Kent today with a win, inside of two days. Watching the Test at The Oval, Surrey's home ground of course, one is struck with the idea that it would be extremely difficult to get a result inside two days at the venue.
Has a first class match ever been completed with a result at the Oval, in less than three days? If so, was light/weather a factor, and/or were declarations involved? Today's match involved neither.
Complain about this postPOST NO 8:
How about Chris Cowdrey, when he captained for Eng against West Indies?
Complain about this postDavid Wright (3) - I can think of several instances of three players from the same county but there have probably been more.
Hemita (7) - Hanif, Wazir, Mushtaq and Sadiq Mohammad all played Tests, although never all in the same match (a fifth brother, Raees, played first-class cricket but never a Test). You're correct that Dammika (2 Tests, 4 ODIs), Nishantha (no Tests, 2 ODIs) and Sanjeeva Ranatunga (9 Tests, 13 ODIs) all played internationals. All of them played in the same team as Arjuna, but no two of them in the same team as each other.
Chris Escritt (8) - no. Tony Lewis captained England on his Test debut at Delhi in 1972-73, and there have probably been a few others - I think there is one instance of a player captaining England in his only Test, can't remember who it was though.
Ashok (9) - in Northamptonshire's innings vs Essex at Northampton in 1999 there were 98 extras out of a total of 579 (of which David Sales made 303* after Northants had been 58/6; none of the rest of the first seven batsmen made double figures). I think there was a domestic match in India a few years ago which featured 99 extras in an innings, not sure of the details.
James (10) - yes: in fact the record is a century and 13 wickets, by Ian Botham in the Jubilee Test against India.
Complain about this postI just wanted to know, what's the record for most wickets in one over in all forms of the game?

In the history of test cricket, which is the most common innings total? What totals have never been made? To make it easier lets have a maximum of 350 as the cut off point for the latter stat.
Complain about this postIn response to Chris Escritt:
I seem to remember Lee Germon captaining New Zealand on his Test debut in about 1997. He also kept wicket, so big day for him...
Complain about this postThe first test match I saw as a small boy was England VS. West Indies at Sabina Park circa 1948. One of the English players who has stuck in my memory is a tall, blond fast bowler named Tremlett. Is he a relative of the Tremlett now playing for England?
Complain about this postIn the 2nd test of the series against Sri Lanka last summer got a pair and was out in the first over twice. im sure this has happened before but Tharanga was the non-striker on both occasions, has this ever happened before?
On a more simpler note, has any individual hit their first ball in test cricket for six?
Cheers Bearders!
Complain about this postIs it allowed for a team to change wicket-keepers during the game with another member on the field (without him being injured)? So the two switch places. If yes has there been an instance of the switched wicket keeper coming on to bowl?
Complain about this postI recall Ian Salisbury being out hit-wicket in his debut innings for Englands vs Pakistan at Lords in '92. Is this the only instance of this on debut ?
Complain about this postWhich batsmen have the highest scores for a losing cause in a test match and a one day international? Possibly they are Ponting who scored 250 odd in a test match against India and yet lost and Hayden's 180 odd for a losing cause against New Zealand.

Complain about this post5 for 41. Their figures at close of play on the second day for the second innings are also identical. Has this happened before??
Bearders,
if the batsmen are running a single and the throw from the fielding side hits a helmet that is placed behind the wicket keeper is that 6 runs in total - and are the 5 penaly runs awarded to the batsman or to extras ?
Complain about this postre. posts 8, 14 & 19 :
#19 about Lee Germon is correct.
#14 - Chris Cowdrey wasn't making his debut when he captained England against West Indies. His debut was against India in Bombay in 1984.
Complain about this postWhat you have to remember about the batting average/highest score issue is that the highest score is the highest score in a single innings for that batsmen but the batting average is the average number of runs BETWEEN DISMISSALS not the average per innings.
So, as others have correctly stated, if you have not been dismissed in, say, eight innings you cannot have a batting average even though you have batted eight times and perhaps scored a few hundreds. Then the first time the batsmen is dismissed then he will obtain a batting average.

Can you explain to me the rulings for extra overs after an interrupted day's play?
Whenever you get posed the question on TMS you seem to splutter and cough without giving a coherent answer and I'm sure the "Bearded Wonder" can answer that simplest of questions....
Complain about this postHad a debate recently about the achievements of Shane Warne and Muttiah Muralitharan and I argued, that although they currently have about the same number of Test wickets to their name, Warne had taken his wickets against a higher calibre of opposition.
Based on that, could you give stats as to how many wickets each have taken if you discount those taken against sides outwith the 'Big Eight' i.e Zimbabwe, Kenya and Bangladesh.

Complain about this postI believe every Test so far, with the exception of the Old Trafford Test against the West Indies, has been rain-affected (although at time of writing it looks unlikely that The Oval India test will be so).
How many minutes (or maybe that should be hours) have been lost in this summer's Tests? What is the record for rain-affected Tests in an English summer in terms of minutes lost and number of tests affected, and have all Tests in a summer ever been rain-affected?
In addition, what is the record for minutes/hours lost in County cricket this summer (so far) and does that constitute a record?

22- Yes, this is perfectly legal. This has been discussed in recent ABs and there are many instances of WKs taking wickets.
Complain about this postAnswer to post 28
According to law 41, if the ball, whilst in play, strikes a protective helmet that has been left on the ground within the field of play, then the ball becomes 'dead' and five penalty runs are awarded to the batting side.
Complain about this postPenalty runs always appear in the extras column and are never credited to any batsmen.
Law 18 says that when the ball becomes dead for any reason other than the fall of a wicket, the batting side (and specifically the 'striking' batsman) are credited with any completed runs before the call of 'dead ball'. So in your example, unless the batsmen had completed one run and were starting on a second, they would only get five penalty runs. Had they completed one run, then the striker would get a single and the team five penalty runs.

a player's average is worked out by the total number of runs he has scored divided by the number of times he is out (not the number of innings).
EG scores of 15, 5*, 5*, 5*, 5*, 5*, 5*, 5*
gives a total score of 50 and only out once.
50/1 = an average of 50 with a high score of 15.
usually only happens with tail enders who end up not out a lot of the time.
Complain about this postApart from when Jim Laker took 19 wickets and Tony Lock took the other one how many times have only two bowlers taken all twenty wickets in either first class or test cricket?
Complain about this postI've always thought the stats regarding tailender batting to be misleading. To measure their performance solely on their average is misleading. The dominant factors in tailend batting are:
1) Average partnership
2) Number of balls faced
3) Time at the crease
These are more accurate indicators of their duration at the crease, which is their job. Especially when partnering higher order batsmen who manipulate the strike.

3. Asim Kamal (Pak) v SA in 2003

Have any other teams achieved this feat since then, and how often has it occurred?

The three batsmen in the 1972-1973 3rd Test at the National Stadium in Karachi who were dismissed for 99 (a record) were:
(in order of dismissal)
Majid Khan & Mushtaq Mohammed in the Pakistan's 1st innings and Dennis Amiss in England's 1st innings. No batsman scored a century in that drawn match.
(26) Dom Lee
Only one batsman has been out for 299, Martin Crowe. Bradman was stranded on 299*
Six batsmen have scored 199, none more than once. Andy Flower has been stranded on 199*
The list of batsmen scoring 199 is here:
On 71 occasions, a batsman has been dismissed for 99. The record is twice, jointly held by the following:
Mike Atherton (Eng)
Greg Blewett (Aus)
Sourav Ganguly (Ind)
Salim Malik (Pak)
Richie Richardson (WI)
Michael Smith (Eng)
John Wright (NZ)
Note: 99* has been scored 5 times. Geoff Boycott has scored 99 and 99* (once each).

What is the lowest standard deviation (i.e., the smallest spread about the average) of runs scored by a winning team in a test match? Last weekend, I made my senior debut for the 4th XI at my club, Brentham, in Ealing. Going in to bat at 6, I was making good progress and had scored 27 when I drove the ball off a SLA bowler back down the ground. It struck my batting partner on the shoulder and bounced off for the bowler to take the catch. They appealed and I was given out. What I was wondering was is this the correct decision? If the ball hits either the other batsman, the umpire or the stumps and the fielders catches it without it bouncing, is it out? And have you heard of this kind of dismissal (i.e. batsman being caught off partner) ever occuring in Test cricket?
Thanks

This is the first instance of both teams going unchanged through a three-test series.

(69) - Rajiv -
The most number of runs conceded in an innings by a single bowler is by Australian offspinner Leslie Fleetwood-Smith who took 1 wicket while conceding 298 runs in 87 overs against England at the Oval. England scored 903-7.
The worst bowling analysis ever(no wickets taken, most runs conceded) is Mohammad Khan's (Pak) 0-259 in a mere 54 overs for Pakistan against the West Indies at Sabina Park in 1958
For a full list of all 22 occasions a bowler has conceded more than 200 runs (only India's Vinoo Mankad has had this happen twice) see

Law 33 says that EITHER batsman can be out handling the ball if they touch it with the hand not holding the bat while it is in play . It also states that a batsman can be out handled the ball off a wide. Of course, if a batsman touches a wide ball, the call of wide is rescinded. So how can this be done?
Here's a possibility:
The ball is a wide, the batsmen attempt to run a bye, a fielder throws the ball in and either batsman knocks it away (or catches it) with the hand not holding the bat. Then the batsman is out handled the ball
(If it was with any other part of the body or bat, or the hand holding the bat, then the batsman is out obstructing the field, under Law 37)

Sorry Alex, you were out.
Law 33.3(e) says a catch is fair if..
"a fielder catches the ball after it has touched an umpire, another fielder or the other batsman. However, it is not a fair catch if the ball has touched a protective helmet worn by a fielder, although the ball remains in play".
I don't know if this has ever occurred in Test cricket, though

1. could anyone tell me why players from the sub continent have not been knighted when players from other nations have for example
Sir Richard Hadlee
Sir Garfield Sobers
Sir Vivian Richards
to name a few then why not
Sir Sunil Gavaskar
Sir Kapil Dev
Sir Imran Khan
Sir Sachin Tendulkar
Re question 77, afraid so Alex. I was out in similar circumstances when I hit a widish delivery on to the thigh of the silly mid off, and it rebounded up in the air and was caught by the slip fielder. As the ball did not touch the ground between me hitting it and the fielder catching it, it is a legitimate delivery.

Fascinating column and a fantastic broadcast of TMS, particularly the lunch break with Aggers and John Lithgow, a truly classic piece of TMS fun.
Now Anil Kumble has acheived the unique distinction of having taken all 10 wickets in an innings and scored a century in Test cricket (oddly unremarked upon by any commentary that I heard).
My question is has anyone achieved this same feat in First class cricket, and has anyone achieved the ultimate of doing both in the same match? If not who's come closest?
Cheers

A player's average is calculated by dividing the number of runs scored by the number of times he gets out.
If a player stays not out at the end of the inning then numerator increases but the denominator stays the same.
That's how you get an average higher than your highest score
Complain about this postBill,
Matt Prior was out without scoring in England's first innings at The Oval, but he took part in three successive partnerships:
15 with Ian Bell for the 7th wicket
2 with Ryan Sidebottom for the 8th
no runs with Chris Tremlett for the 9th.
Can you think of a more 'successful' score of no runs in Test Cricket terms of contributions to partnerships?

How about these two ducks:
Geoff Allott (NZ), a No.11 batsman, batted for 101 min, scoring 0, in a 32 run partnership with Hamish Marshall, spending enough time in the middle, that New Zealand, although forced to follow on, managed to eke out a draw against South Africa in Auckland in 1999.
Manjural Islam, No. 10 batsman, held on for 72 minutes while scoring 0 for Bangladesh against Sri Lanka, in a 40 run partnership with Tapash Baisya, almost a quarter of the runs of the innings (Bangladesh were all out for 163)
Complain about this postBearders - My friends and I have been having a long running discussion, and wonder if you can help us.
Has our mate Damo ever got a round of drinks in? He is adamant that he has, however we are not so sure.
Complain about this postMy question for Bearders: In Somerset's CC2 match against Glamorgan, Justin Langer became the fifth Somerset player to score more than 1000 runs this season. What is the record number of players from a single county scoring more than 1000 runs in a season?
Complain about this postAfter day 1 of a test match it is often discussed who is on top. As a yard-stick I was wondering what people consider a perfectly balanced score between bat and ball? (assuming a full days play on a normal pitch)
(i.e whats the avergae number of runs scored and wickets taken after day one)
My guess is 300/6
Complain about this postRe Query 87,
I don't think it is possible to answer in the abstract. When the pundits say who they think is happier at stumps, they are not just taking into account the score. They are also taking into account what they think a decent total would be on that wicket and in those conditions.
If conditions are extremely poor, then 250 all out might mean the batting team is happier. On another day, 350/8 might leave the bowling team chuffed to bits.
In any event, the average first innings total (all out, rather than at end of day one) is under 300. So a score of 300/6 is likely to be a good one for the batters on most wickets.

I don't know if it's happened in a test match, but I remember seeing it in an ODI.
I knew it was Andrew Symonds and I have found the match. It was Aus v SL in Jan 2006. Symonds straight drove powerfully and Michael Clarke could not get out of the way, and the ball spooned up of his boot to mid on. See match description at address below:
I trying to find out the rational behind each pro40 cricket team being given names such as Essex Eagles, Leicestershire Foxes etc. Is there any website I can check this information and see all the team names
