Introducing Thom the teacher
Meet Thom, fresh-faced teacher and DJ extraordinaire.
He's going to be a regular on the show over the next year as he tells all about what life is like as a teacher in Britain in 2007. Is it really just unruly kids, exam targets and unsupportive parents?
Take it away, Thom...
Hello. I'm Thom Dunn, a secondary school teacher of English, and over the next term I will be on here blogging my experiences of life as a newly-qualified teacher.
Earlier today you may have heard me on the Victoria Derbyshire show, partly speaking but mostly saying "erm" in an attempt to plug the nervous pauses. Anyway, it was all good fun, and the questioning was gentle. I wasn't expecting Victoria to casually mention the fact I was speaking to 2 million (!?!) listeners but I'm pretty sure I did not say anything rude.
Besides, having spent the rest of the day chasing errant homework and trying to inspire Year 9s, I've come to the conclusion that national radio has nothing on teaching when it comes to potential pitfalls. With school finished, I've turned my attention to tomorrow - lots of non-fiction and media work with my little Year 7s.
Busy time at the moment: assessment deadlines, open evenings and staff football match against a rival school all imminent. Clinging bravely to the semblance of a social life too - my weekend DJ'ing is my secret weapon in keeping me sane. I'll keep you posted.
