Does John Hogan Deserve Any Sympathy

Victoria Derbyshire | 08:07 UK time, Thursday, 24 January 2008

John Hogan is innocent of the murder of his son; a Greek court ruled that Mr Hogan was suffering from clinicial depression when he threw his child from a 4th floor balcony and killed him.

Hogan said in court "I did not do it. I have no guilt whatsoever...the person you see before you is not the person who jumped from the balcony...the sane John Hogan would not have done what I did that night." Yet a 6 yr old boy is dead. His own child. And Hogan has been sent to a psychiatric hospital not jail.

Here's what some of you are saying about this case today..."our attitudes to mental illness are still in the dark ages"...and this: "clearly this man has simply used this so-called sob story to get away with it", and another "I think people use mental illness as an excuse".

If you've suffered from mental illness, please do get in touch this morning. Can only you understand what John Hogan said in court? Do we take mental illnesses seriously enough? Is mental illness reason enough not to go to jail for killing your child? I look forward as always to reading and debating your comments.

I think the general premise of this question is problematic. Whether he was in a state of mental anguish or diminshed responsibility does not take away from the fact that a child was involved. If we could be entirely detached and accept this was a result of a mental illness, then we could offer sympathy, but the point is a child has lost their life and I think any parent listening to this case like myself would find themselves incapable of sympathy. The court has heard the case and come toa conclusion but I think it's too much to ask to except sympathy.

    Victoria,

I don't actually remember Hogan asking for any sympathy and listening to your show today was as depressing as ever when things like this are discussed . Just ignore the question you pose at the start of the discussion and let rip with any old hang em and flog prejudice without any knowledge of the case other than tabloid reports.
The amount of "experts" that rang your show this morning none of whom were in the court nor heard any of the evidence nor sat in on any of the Greek Psychologists Interviews with Hogan ( still he's a Greek so he obviously knows nothing about mental Health )but they still know that Hogan is shamming, unbelieveable.
Yesterdays show was another case in point
Question " Why is it so hard to talk about miscarriage " cue loads of unbearably sad stories of Women and couples who have suffered horrendous miscarriages but out of all of them about 2 actually addressed the question posed, i felt almost voyeuristic listening in on their misery.
If you are going to ignore the Question posed ( as you do almost every day ) why pose one.

Why cannot we not able to 'SEND' comments to your Blog?
Victoria, I know this will cause you pressure, and I am really sorry if it does. but you seem the only person within the ´óÏó´«Ã½ to whom I can make a valid point - without being callled Racist etc etc etc...
I simply ask, why is this woman claiming damages for ATTEMPTED Rape?
On the other hand, is it ONLY Women - yet again - that can claim such damages?
What about the proven-innocent MEN that were accused of Rape etc - but were acquitted? - can they not also claim damages?
Again - why cannot ALL victims of ANY crime claim damages???
I am puzzled - it seems that ONLY Women are considerd and ALWAYS treated differently to Men.
WE Men are SO disconsolate - Sorry.
I would really appreciate only a response. I have tried to raise such points on 'HYS' but have been ignored for at least one year... I gave up.
    Many Thanks, Victoria... Tez

I am a deaf football fan and have been going to watch Doncaster Rovers for many years now. I rely a lot on my family that attend to tell me some of the important things that are being said before the game, (such as player of the month and also special gusts that are attending) I also have to rely on my mobile phone for ordering food and drink at any stadium as other wise I would have to ask my family to get it for me or to be with me while i am ordering. I would also like to know how other deaf people cope with this at stadiums across the country.
