Richey: for poorer?

Victoria Derbyshire | 18:50 UK time, Tuesday, 15 January 2008

I confess I found interviewing Kenny Richey today difficult. Lorraine has posted on the thread below saying she thought some of my questions were insensitive. She could well be right. In fact when the listener from Aberdeenshire Joanne rang up, she seemed to have much more of an affinity with him. When you can reach that understanding with a guest it's often possible to draw them out of themselves - I certainly wasn't able to do that with Mr Richey today.

Listen to the full interview with Kenny Richey online here (18mins).

Some of you (again on the thread below) say you could feel the tension - maybe that's a euphemism for the siliences that occurred regulalry during Mr Richey's conversation with me. I'm usually someone who is isn't afraid of silences on the radio - today I think it may have contributed to it being a hard listen.

Mr Richey certainly has been through the most appalling incarceration - jailed at 22 years of age, released at 43. Perhaps if any of us was locked away for so long we'd be angry and suspicious and non-communicative.

One thing I didn't ask and afterwards wished I had - why had he wanted to do any interviews at all? He was clearly bitter about some of the newspaper interviews that appeared in the weekend papers - so why do another one on national radio? Anyway I didn't, so that's not very useful is it.

Victoria I thought you did well with Kenny Richey. There was an interview with him here on Scottish television last night where he said he had felt like committing suicide more often since his release than during his imprisonment. He looked and sounded to me extremely depressed. He certainly struck me as someone who really needs help.

I work out of the country and I am only home for short periods of time, as my dates and length of time at home cannot guarantee when I will be home or for how long, I have seen a dentist, been told I need treatment and asked to come back in several months, however if I produce pound notes I can normally say when I would like to be treated. Many Thanks
