Linford Christie, the Olympic torch and the truth

Victoria Derbyshire | 13:58 PM, Friday, 22 February 2008

1. Should Christie have been invited to carry the Olympic torch for this summer's Beijing Games?

2. Why did the GLA say Ken Livingstone hadn't issued him with that invitation, when LC's agent Sue Barrett rang the programme today and read out an extract from a letter which was signed by Mr Livingstone asking LC to take part?

Listen to Sue Barrett talking to Victoria about Linford's invitation

3. Who should carry the torch? Your nominations please and we'll pass them on...

There have been individual takers, national bodies and organisations using drugs to gain an advantage in most sports. Some athletes have gone on record saying that it is not possible to be at the top of sporting achievement unless drugs are part of the preparation. It is my opinion that these statements are very nearly accurate for particular sports; sports that demand far too much physical effort in concentrated form. In athletics I believe that the time has come to eliminate the sprints from the programmes. There is an awful lot of nonsense spoken of the 100meters being the 'Blue ribband' event. To me, the sprints are an opportunity for a select band of overhyped, by media and drugs, men showing child like behavior of no interest to many sports fans. compare their behaviour to the dignified show put on by the middle and long distance athletes.
