Men who use prostitutes

Victoria Derbyshire | 08:55 UK time, Friday, 22 February 2008

This morning Steve Wright will be sentenced to life for the murder of five women who worked as prostitutes in Ipswich. Even as Wright was continuing to kill, women could still be found on the streets of the town selling sex.

So why do women do it? It's illegal to solicit, pimp and run a brothel in this country; it's also illegal to kerb crawl - but it's not illegal to pay for sex. Is that one of the reasons why men do it?

There are many different types of sex workers, many different types of men who pay women for sex. There is no typical client, although many of us probably have an image of the kind of men who use prostitutes.

We wanted an insight into one man's reasons for paying for sex, and into the kind of "relationship" he has with the woman he visits.

For the purposes of this interview we put to one side the arguments about legalisation and decriminalisation.

I've been speaking to Derek, who's in his early fifties. It's a very frank conversation - so you might not want your children to hear it. We've disguised his voice to protect his identity. He told me how long he'd been visiting prostitutes...

Listen to the interview with Derek here (15m 35s).

If I went off the rails after working at a private company woukd antbody cite 'their social responsibilty' to myself. I think not. So why should Football do anything for Gazza, His 'friends' should take on the role, but more importantly Gazza has to want the help. From the snippets I've gleaned from the press Gazza gasn't reached that point yet.

This issue with Gazza just highlights the problems this country has with Depression there is no infastructure until it all goes wrong by which time the person who is suffering is nearly past help
I had a member of my family for six years suffering from depression no one would listen to me and even worse the ones that did could not do anything because of all the stupid confidentiality laws. In the end the member of my family did something so irrational that it could have ended up in someone bieng killed.

The subject of depression and how we handle it needs addressing. The country's social workers are to full of themselves and feel to importnt to make decisions as to the welfare of the people they look after.
Back to Gazza we can all argue that it should not happen to him he has the money knowledge and freinds that should help him through this. Over the years he has done some silly things and at times I have had little respect for him, but he has passion for his country, his game and he needs help I know some of what he must be going through
    Get well soon Gazza

I was amused by one of the callers who described using prostitutes as a basic male need - for some. Either it is a basic need, or it isn't - it can't be only 'for some'.

I have never had the urge to visit a prostitute and I know of plenty of other men who have never visited one either.

People need to realise that it is not necessarily 'normal' to use prostitutes.

Might not be as common, but there are females that use prostitutes and escorts too. And not all escorts are female. The reason i guess escorts willingly chose to solicit their bodies is because sex sells and it pays well...some are forced into it through an addiction or being homeless and/or jobless. Escorts will always be around whilst there is a demand for them. Personally i think if somebody wants to sell their body, its their choice and who am i to judge? I'm not god

In reference to Andy's post below people need to also accept that it isn't necessarily "abnormal" to want to or to visit sex workers either.

Self congratulation, haughtiness and sanctimony of this nature is precisely what makes this British society so emotiionally retarded and allows for sex workers to be alienated and ostracised in the manner that they are.

It truly is time to grow up and to treat this issue sensibly and make life safer for these ladies - or do we want another Steve Wright story to terrorise another town?
