Adebayor's started so well for Man City
Mr Brown's soft spot for United
Gordon Brown has just told Eamonn Holmes that he has a 'soft spot' for Manchester United (partly to do with Munich, he said).
If you missed the interview - you can download it as part of Eamonn's podcast here.
So is that a generational thing? Cos I don't know anyone my age who has a 'soft spot' for them unless MU is their team.
They're no-one's second team are they?
It must be a generational thing and complete je alousy but remember victoria there are at least 60,000 united fans out there now all in our mid forties who were following united when we were winning nowt and the scoreboard end at old trafford was a pile of cinders and no roof.
Now in live fremantle but watch united every game. mick greenwood.
second team ..what is a second team ??...I have never heard any genuine football fan say they have a second team. This sounds like the kind of thing that 90s football fans who are chasing glory would say..." I support Barnsley but my second team is Liverpool because I visited there once when I was a kid" Any true fan supports one team and one team only....who cares what team the glory hunter fans pretend to support as their so called second team....
There is rarely, if ever, a real second team. People often refer to a second team - when they feel closer or an admiration for a team - be it something as traumatic as Munich, or as light as Newcastle's fantastic football under Keegan. From Aberdeen to Zenit St. Petersburg - they are rarely if ever anyone's second teams. We shouldn't make Man U a special case.
McBean the UnElected only has a soft spot for Man Utd because some spin docotr told him to say it as it coinicided with the Munich crash.
I've not supported one team all my life ; i've supported three .
Southport ( my home town team ) , Liverpool , & Preston North End .
Southport from the age of 6 , PNE from 8 , & the Mighty Reds from 9 , all up to the present day .
pandering to the a.b.u.'s victoria?
sounds like a typical 90's 'footy' fan, second team w.t.f.?
stick to your sub jeremy kyle show
Hi Ian
I didn't think I was particularly pandering to the abu's - I jst haven't heard anyone say (like Gordon Brown did) they supported Raith Rovers but had a soft spot for M'chester Utd. I've heard people say they have a soft spot for Blythe or Montrose or Newcastle etc etc but never a MU or Chelsea.
Cheers,
Victoria
I think the key to Mr.Brown's "soft spot" to Man.U. is his comment "partly to do Munich". It's the political thing to say at the moment. It is not a generation thing; I am older than Mr.Brown and I remember Munich distinctly, yet I can't stand Man.U., particularly that open mouthed gum chewing face of Man.U. I am a dedicated "Gooner".
Two predictions for last Saturday.
1) City fans would boo and jeer during the minute silence.
2) United would wipe the floor with City even Larry Grayson or Mark "shut that door" Lawrenson said it would be 3-0....
Every camera and microphone and spotter was at the City end to wait for even a mobile phone to go off waiting to punce and hit Ctrl P on their vile copy which was so lazily written.
What happened Victoria
a) Impeccable Silence
b) United outlclassed on the pitch
c) Man United Munich Scarves appeared on Ebay.
Will we get an apology from the MU adoring media ?
I doubt it, you dont have the cojones !
There's only one Frank Swift !
Blue Moon....
MU are second team for many if you like to watch high quality football and like to follow Fergusson's incredible career. Definitely my second team. Can't stand the jealousy which constantly downgrades remarkable achievement.
For the older generation, City was actually the second team for most United fans and vice-versa as they could not afford to go to away matches.
My father's family (United) and mother's family (City) would go to Maine Road one week and then Old Trafford the next.
I regularly go to the Reebok and watch the Wanderers.
(Incidentally, I drove past the Reebok last week and they flew their flags at half-mast which was a great gesture.)

Two predictions for last Saturday.
1) City fans would boo and jeer during the minute silence.
And who raised these fears? Kevin Parker of the City Supporters' Club.
He was the first to "predict" problems from the City fans
What happened Victoria
a) Impeccable Silence
Six fireworks let off my mindless City thugs outside of the stadium.
b) United outlclassed on the pitch
Agree. Now all you have to do is actually win a trophy.
c) Man United Munich Scarves appeared on Ebay.
36 United scarves (0.05% of attendance) and 2 City scarves (0.06% of attendance)
Will we get an apology from the MU adoring media ?
Where is this "adoring" United media? The MEN through Paul Hince has become an extended fanzine for City.
...just another bitter blue. You're not even happy when you beat United.
