Should the Media not report Suicides?
The mother of one of the teeenagers who hanged himself in the Bridgend area has linked the number of suicides with the media coverage. The Assistant Chief Constable of South Wales criticised two local newspapers for their coverage yesterday. Yet 17 young people have committed suicide in this area in less than two years and it appears to be a phenomemon. Perhaps your answer to the question above depends on whether you believe there is some sort of link between the coverage and the deaths.
Hi Victoria
Just been listening to the programme and the comments re the young people who have commmited suicide.
I don't know if you are aware of the School Nursing Service. Most offer 'Open Door' sessions in schools for young people to come and talk. I think it helps them to offload. We also refer to specialist services e.g Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) and GP's. It may be a good opportunity to hilight this service, however, like everyone else, we are stretched to the limit.
This is a very sensitive issue as the media has a right to report on these deaths and maybe shed some light on them. But at the same time it could encourage more acts of tragedy to occur.
I cannot believe it is coincidence unless this happens daily elsewhere an we never hear about it.
Suicide is still pretty much a taboo subject, the more we talk about it and the consequences of it the less taboo it becomes.
I applaud the show for talking about this subject and Beth for coming and expressing how she felt. More often than not you are feel as if no matter how pressing your feelings and problems are because of your age it is somehow less important or not as major as for those older than you. The pressures are very different but no less valid.
