The Apprentice: I was fired

Featured Blogger | 10:08 AM, Monday, 24 March 2008

Former Apprentice contestant, Andy Jackson is blogging for us all week

andyjacksonx152.jpg

Hi everyone. My name is Andy Jackson. You may/may not remember me from last years Apprentice. If you blinked and missed me I was the 1st to hear the immortal words 鈥淵ou're Fired鈥 by Sir Alan Sugar (SAS). One year on and time has flown. I鈥檝e been through two jobs and still waiting for 'the one' that will see me through to retirement as a millionaire (precious chance).

I guess what you learn is that no matter what reason you go on to the programme for, if it was for fame or fortune or God forbid you actually wanted to work for SAS (guilty as charged on that count) your life won't be the same again.

To all the people who still on a daily basis shout across the street 鈥淵OU'RE FIRED鈥 or who rudely whisper to their friends 鈥渋sn鈥檛 that the guy off the telly鈥, please remember all I ever wanted to do was better my life, look after my family and get the job that was advertised somewhere amongst all the other irrelevance.

Read yesterday in the Sunday tabloids that this years Apprentice candidates are a rum bunch indeed. To name a few - a wannabe pop star, an ex-drug addict, a failed business guru and some poor sod whose ex-wife has decided to cash in on the 鈥渓ove rat鈥 angle.

It reminded me of last year when all you got was a bombardment of tabloid media stories that you were unable to defend due to the lack of media training and the fact that the PR company we were contractually tied to took care (or released) of every story for you with no actual right of reply from ourselves.

We could only talk to the media on our own when we were actually fired making it a huge hardship for our wife鈥檚 and kids who had to live through the stories and lies printed and not been able to defend ourselves against people who you used to work and live with trying to make a couple of quid by selling some tat that the papers can have a field day with鈥 it sounds like i'm a bitter and twisted old man here so I better lighten up the mood tomorrow, I just feel for this lot this year as the media circus are relentless in digging up stuff to fill the papers.

Considering the spectacular amount of money wasted every day by the 大象传媒, couldn't someone have been found to spend 5 minutes spell-checking this appalling example of poor English?

Andy, i do remember you. I remember you for the brave and very professional way you spoke for not only yourself, but also your team. I have high regard for men like you say it like it is without making other people look back. Dont stop being you and i know for a fact that many other people feel the same about you. they just dont have time to respond to every rubbish they read in the papers. Best of luck, and oh, i loved this article.

Good to read Andys views on the programme a year on. I for one felt a bit sorry for him last year, he seemed to throw himself at the 'show' from the first minute and some of the others tripped him up. Hope things turn out for you Andy, I was sorry you didn't go furhter last year as you were the only contestant i could relate to.

This really does sound like a way to pull at the heart strings

You signed up for a TV program, expect your life to be exposed. You and your family knew of what the media will do to you, as I'm sure you have grown up in the 20th Centray.

You aren't happy till you get that kinda job, it's really not all bout the money, just sounds to me your that arragant kinda business guy who tailgates in their M3 till they get their own way. Get a job you enjoy doing!

Sorry Andy, but anyone who puts themselves up for the media circus believing it will 'better their life' is either incredibly naive or completely desperate or both.

I won't stoop to knocking you for you grammar, but did you really think going on a TV show would be a positive experience for you and your family? Have you ever WATCHED these programs?

I'm a teacher, and I'm torn between the desire to use this for my students' next English assignment, and the urge to protect them from it. No child should see language this mangled. I know that part of the point of the Apprentice is that you needn't be a high achiever at school to succeed in business, but I think to have a 大象传媒- endorsed blog you should have some notion of how to use language to communicate.

  21. At 11:53 AM on 25 Mar 2008, DaveH wrote:

The points about use of English are quite ironic really, since if you complain to the 大象传媒 about their output, you will receive a response along the lines of "it is the person's style and we are not here to regulate language". So, Andy, I would recommend a job application to the 大象传媒!

Read the Apprentice follow-up from last year and you will find that nearly all of them are in some kind of vague "consultancy" role now - well, you would not employ most of them, would you? While it is true that TV manipulates and viewers do not actually see what goes on, it is a choice as to whether you go on, but most of these deadbeat exhibitionists are actually trying to get a toehold in the media, while giving the rest of us a good laugh.

Frankly, if you can't string a sentence together in proper English then you should be setting your job aspirations a bit lower than a six-figure position with a top company. I will admit that you certainly weren't the only person on The Apprentice that didn't seem to have a grasp of basic English. I'm still not sure why you're blogging here. While it might sound a bit harsh, The Apprentice is entertainment television and nobody really cares what you think or what you're doing once it's finished. Please, please tell me that the 大象传媒 are not paying you for this!

Can we all move away from the endless childishness about the standard of English being used here and talk about 大象传媒s programme 'The Apprentice'?
I remember you Andy, and I think I'm right in saying that you coined the phrase 'let's work 'til we bleed' or 'we work 'til we bleed' on the show. I also agree with a previous comment that you were stitched up, although I'm not sure how much longer you'd have lasted in amongst the pool of sharks that were last year's contestants.
I love the show but my concern as they move into a third series is that people will now only apply so that they can further an ambition to become a television presenter, or tv 'personality'. Does anyone actually want the job anymore? And if not will this eventually erode the essence of the show?

  24. At 09:45 PM on 25 Mar 2008, Dave-0 wrote:

It is actually the fourth series. To recount, Tim won the first one, then it was Michelle, then it was that posh kid, Simon I think his name was, so this is the fourth.

Going by very simple logic, I think a female will win it this time. Mark my words!

Reminds me of a great line by Sir Alan Sugar said to Sayed: "I've got your card marked!"

This has the potential to be very entertaining tv so I'm watching it all the way!
