What stops you ringing me?

Victoria Derbyshire | 07:48 AM, Tuesday, 20 May 2008

If you have a look at my Mohammed writes that's he too shy to 'phone in.

I know if the boot was on the other foot I probably wouldn't call in to share my experience of being a mum/what I thought of michael vaughan's batting/domestic violence/the 10p tax row or whatever the current topic was. You may not know but we have approx 2 million listeners to our show every week. Only 20% at any one time ring us - which means for an audience-led interactive show most people are still simply listening. Obviously I'm not complaining about that, but what does it say about most Five Live listeners who tune in between 9 and 12? That they are too shy, like Mohammed, or they wouldn't dream of ringing a phone-in show because some people are still a bit snooty about that kind of programming? ( too many real people and all that instead of "experts"). Perhaps they're not engaged enough with the subjects to get in touch, maybe time is too precious to spend it chatting to me and it's easier to send in a text/email.
