Murraymania or Murraymildenthusiasm
Tony Parsons writing in today says he won't be supporting Andy Murray in his fourth round match at Wimbledon today but WILL be backing his opponent Richard Gasquet. Why does Murray split opinion so much? There are many theories: his petulance, his admission (honesty?) that he would support anyone but the England football team, the fact that he's not Tim Henman ...the list goes on. To listen to his match tune into Five Live from 12.30 with Simon Mayo and Clare Balding.
More cricket controversy
Did you hear about the controversial run-out of New Zealand's Grant Elliot in yesterday's one day international between England and New Zealand at the Oval?
Collingwood apologised afterwards and said he'd made a mistake. Did he?
The Heinz ad
Here are some emails from listeners who heard Carl from Birmingham explaining his objections to the Heinz ad showing two men kissing...
Anne in Birmingham wrote: "WHY ARE YOU VICTIMISING THIS CALLER, HE DOESN'T AGREE WITH HOMOSEXUALITY AND HE'S ENTITLED TO THAT OPINION. WHY ARE YOU GIVING HIM SUCH A HARD TIME?"
Beryl emailed to say "I' m 62...I've seen the advert.....it's amusing....can't see any gay connections and even if there were I wouldn't have any objections.... disappointed that the advert has been taken off. Some of your callers are so bigotted.....well done for the way you handle them."
Douglas complained: "I am a gay man and am furious at your handling of the Heinz advert debate on Wednesday 25/06/08. Why you let Carl keep speaking such homophobic rubbish and to give him a platform for his bigoted views is unbelievable. To only stop him when he mentioned Muslims was far too late. Do you not realise that it is against the law for people to talk the type of rubbish you allowed Carl to say on your programme. I am distressed that it is OK to do a little gay bashing on your programme so long as religion doesn't get brought into it."
Road signs have been scrapped in a German town
Bohmete near Hanover has scrapped all traffic lights and signs. Officials wanted to see if it would make driers more courteous - and it has worked. Not a single accident with a vehicle or pedestrian has been reported.
So if you fancy taking a photo of a roadsign that you makes you cross or confused, and that you think should be scrapped (what does "Changed Priorities Ahead" mean?) then please do email me - victoria@bbc.co.uk or text it to me on 85058. And we'll post them up here.
Gordon Brown has declined our invitation...
..to come on the programme. Shame. He could have celebrated his first year in office with you on Friday.
Here's our "invitation" timetable: we asked if he would come on the show ahead of the local elections in May so you would have an opportunity to talk to him. On Friday April 25th his people told us we wouldn't get the PM but that Jack Straw would come on instead.
After the local election results when Mr Brown promised to "listen and lead" - we invited him on again. We thought it would be good if he could listen to you.
Take 5 Live listener Haroon's common test
- Have you ever owned a sovereign ring?
- Do you know someone called Kylie or Brooklyn?
- Do you have a personalised registration plate?
Listen to how some of our listeners got on with Haroon's common test this morning
Hear listeners taking the common test
Take the test yourself and let me know how you get on?
Don't wear diamonds during the day unless you're the Queen
I had no idea that it's considered common to do so until I watched ´óÏó´«Ã½ One's fabulous Ascot coverage yesterday. Unless you're the Queen, it's NOT de rigeur to flash those stones when the sun is up.
Listen: The rules to wearing diamonds
I immediately ripped off my sparkling necklace and earrings. My Mum always used to tell me it was common to eat outside. What else did your Mum tell you it was common to do?
"Why is everyone so bloody miserable?"
That's what a transport minister Tom Harris asks in his
He's on the programme at 9am this morning - so do get in touch to tell him what mood you're in.....post here right now.
Adrian's Campaign...
To get a lesson on the national curriculum about bone marrow donation is getting somewhere. Here he is on the programme today with Gary Lineker who's signed Adrian's petition:
Listen to Adrian Sudbury and Gary Lineker
Please do read where you can find answers to questions about registering for and donating bone marrow:
A letter to the chancellor
So the Governor of the Bank of England has to write a letter to the chancellor explaining why inflation has breached its 3 per cent limit.
This morning we want you to write your own letter to the Alistair Darling about your money situation - are you feeling poorer? And what do you want him to do to help you?
We'll send your letters on to the Chancellor and see how they compare with Mervyn King's letter.
Your photos to cheer us up..
Inflation's gone up again, noone's got any money, noone can afford to fill up their car, noone can afford to go on holiday this year: do send us a photo that will cheer us up. Text them to 85058 or email victoria@bbc.co.uk. Here are some that we have received so far....
David Davis - does he have your support?
What a dramatic move. He's resigned as an MP over a number of issues, but predominantly last night's vote in the Commons which backed the powers to detain terror suspects for upto 42 days. A (thin) majority of MPs voted for that proposal, and according to opinion polls a majority of the public back the plan too. Do you respect him for what he's done? Is this an example of a conviction politician? Is he protesting in the right way? Or is he antidemocratic - a vote was taken after much debate - and it was passed, whether he likes it or not?
UPDATE - 13/06/08
David Davis agreed to come on and answer your questions on Friday morning with Phil Williams.
Listen to David Davis answering your questions on Friday morning
Alistair Campbell has a go
Gordon Brown held his monthly press conference during our programme today. 5 live has to make lots of judgements about press conferences and whether to bring them to you live or not. Sometimes we listen across and play you the best bits after they've happened, sometimes we just dip in for a couple of minutes, but more often than not we play you the whole thing.
Does The Apprentice reflect business as you know it?
Lying on your CV, bullying, cheating, bribery, ganging up on the weakest member, no room for quirky people. Does The Apprentice tell you everything you need to know about business?
Should terror suspects be held for up to 42 days without charge?
Should terror suspects be held for up to 42 days without charge? That's the battle the government faces tonight in a crucial vote. Rizwaan Sabir is a student from Nottingham who, along with his university administrator Hisham Yezza, was held without charge for six days after downloading an Al Qaeda training manual while researching his Phd.
You can listen to the interview here.
The Former Head of the Met today says the police need to have something in their back pocket to hold someone for 42 days in exceedingly exceptional circumstances.
Does having bipolar disorder mean you can't be a good parent?
Mare is a Five Live listener and lawyer who spoke articulately today about losing her status as the primary carer for her three young children after she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder (sufferers used to be known as manic depressives). She believes she was discriminated against in the family courts because of that illness which she says does NOT prevent her being a good mother. I promised to link to her website, here it is ....https://kidsneedmums.co.uk/
Moving and honest
Some really moving and honest calls from you today. Chris from London has been trying to see his daughter from a previous relationship for eight years;
and Sarah from Brighton called to tell us about the affair her husband had;
The cost of motoring..
If you drive in and around Greater Manchester, you might be paying upto a fiver for the privilege in the future. The more expensive driving a car becomes (so the argument goes), the more people will leave their car at home, which means fewer noxious fumes polluting the atmosphere, fewer cars on the road, traffic flowing more smoothly, less money wasted as businesspeople don't sit in as many jams etc etc. So with motoring costs rising steeply, at what point do you make the decision to leave your car behind and use an alternative?
Why 42 days?
Next week the Commons will vote on whether to extend the time terrorist suspects can be held without charge from 28 days to 42.
When the Home Secretary appeared on the programme to talk to you a few weeks ago, I asked her why 42 days was the magic number
Listen to what Jacqui Smith said here.
doesn't know why it's 42 days; and the that the joint select committee on human rights says even with the earlier this week, the plans still breach human rights laws.
We do however elect politicians to protect us (amongst other things), so perhaps we shouldn't be surprised when they ask for the tools to do that.
What's with the hair David?
David Cameron showed off his new hairdo at PMQs yesterday, the picture above shows his hair before (left) and after (right).
Can anyone help Paul Gascoigne?
Can anyone help ? Gazza's friend and former Spurs team-mate, Gary Mabbutt, and his former agent, Mel Stein, broke their media silence on the programme today after he was released from hospital after being sectioned under the Mental Health Act.
You can listen to the interview here.
Gary Mabbutt told me that Gazza is a proud person who struggles to admit that he needs help. He's hoping the media can rally together to help Paul realise how bad things have become.
But can anyone help him if he doesn't want to help himself? We'll return to the subject on Wednesday's programme.
Our Dog Owners' Charter - your ideas?
When we covered dangerous dogs on Tuesday morning, one of my guests in the studio was Ryan O'Mara, Editor of and professional dog trainer. He brought his dog, a Rottweiler called Mia. Here's a couple of pictures of Ryan and Mia.
Dangerous Dogs or Max Mosley?
The most powerful man in Formula One appeals to keep his job today: Max Mosley has called an 'extraordinary general meeting' of the sport's governing council following allegations he was involved in a nazi-themed orgy with prostitutes. The team have discussed whether we should do this as the phone-in at 9am; but also competing with that is the RSPCA who want to tighten up the Dangerous Dogs Act because it says it's seen a big increase in the number of dogs being used as "weapons"...
Update
We're covering Dangerous Dogs and one of my guests in the studio is Ryan O'Mara, Editor of "K9 Magazine" and professional dog trainer. He brought his dog, a Rottweiler called Mia.
