Does having bipolar disorder mean you can't be a good parent?

Mare is a Five Live listener and lawyer who spoke articulately today about losing her status as the primary carer for her three young children after she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder (sufferers used to be known as manic depressives). She believes she was discriminated against in the family courts because of that illness which she says does NOT prevent her being a good mother.
