Guess who's back?

Wales' only pair of breeding have just returned to their familiar stomping ground for the fifth year running.

Following a 3,000 mile journey from their wintering ground in west Africa, the male landed safely back at Glaslyn last Saturday with the female following on a day later.

Hides really show you Welsh wildlife at its best: close-up and in great variety.

Last weekend I biked up to Forest Farm nature reserve in Cardiff and spent a good couple of hours in their two hides. Tucked right under the M4, Forest Farm is a strange place for wildlife but it runs close to the River Taff and has a good spread of birds and other species in its woodland and pond habitats.

Spectacular starlings

Check out this stunning footage of starlings coming in to roost, captured by a contributor to the ´óÏó´«Ã½ North East Wales website.

Craig Smith, a volunteer warden at , near Wrexham, got in touch after filming the birds' display earlier this month.

The reasons for these spectacular which can involve hundreds of thousands of birds, have yet to be established for certain although it's believed the behaviour is intended to confuse predators.

Black grouse strut their stuff

Did you know that when it comes to wild and wacky courtship displays, Wales is a little-known hot-bed? And we're not talking about St Mary's Street on a Saturday night here.

It's the black grouse mating season and Coed Llandegla Forest in Denbighshire is one of the few places in the UK where you can get to see the beautiful glossy black birds strutting their stuff close up.
