The Battle of the Somme began on July 1 1916 and cost nearly 200, 000 British soldiers their lives. Army cadets from Wrexham will be travelling to Thiepval to take part in parades to commemorate the battle, reports . For 15 year old Liam Smith the journey is especially poignant as it will give him the opportunity to visit the grave of his great uncle, Freddie Edwards, who lost his life during the Battle of the Somme. While in France the cadets are also planning to take part in a sponsored walk to raise money for charities including the Poppy Appeal.
