Why so negative about Welsh?

There's a real heated debate going on in our Messageboard about the value of the Welsh language. Now I know it's a tit-for-tat kind of spat that comes up now and again; dissenters say 'you don't need to learn the language' etc, etc and the pros fight back.

But, what I don't understand is why those who don't appreciate the importance of the language feel so strongly to the point of being vehemently opposed. Why can't they just say chwarae teg [fair play] and let people that want to siarad [speak] / dysgu Cymraeg [learn Welsh] get on with it? Can you explain?
