Hospital shake-up on hold

Nick - Web Team Nick - Web Team | 09:16 UK time, Thursday, 7 June 2007

Controversial plans to close some of our hospitals have been put on hold with Welsh Assembly First Minister Rhodri Morgan saying it was "an olive branch" so other political parties could help find a way forward.

reports Mr Morgan as saying that while changes to the health service were needed for the 21st century, people expect to see "services being brought closer to their home before they will accept some of the services have to move further from home".

That is exactly the issue for people fighting to save Abergele & St Asaph hospitals from closure and trying to stop the planned loss of beds at Flint Hospital. They would be happy for an improved service - but are concerned the shake-up is actually cost cutting and will lead to a reduction in provision.
