Castle Cement - fire and fears

This photo taken by Vinney shows a fire at Castle Cement's works at Padeswood yesterday. Local newspaper, the says today that evacuated workers and residents looked on as black smoke billowed from the 360ft kiln, shortly after noon. says the fire was caused by a feed belt, which is used in the cement making process, which went on fire.

The campaign group has long been opposed to the kiln and the incinerator and monitors emissions at the works. Meanwhile, which runs the works says it is the most modern in Europe. Their argument has always been that the new chimney secured the future of the works, the jobs of 200 employees and brings £10m annually into the local economy. Is it worth it?
