HM Stanley Hospital staff were yesterday told the 22-bed hospital will shut in March because health bosses are spending too much money maintaining old buildings. The hospital is said to need £2.5m to bring it up to standard.

After 30 years with North Wales Police, Detective Chief Superintendent Chris Corcoran is retiring. He was first posted to Rhyl where he recalls one of his tasks was to search for the head of a woman who had been murdered by her son. To his horror, he found it wrapped in a bin liner stuffed down a fox hole.

Health and environmental studies will be carried out into the Hanson Cement plant in Padeswood, near Mold. And, while the firm wants to see the investigation completed as quickly as possible to confirm its belief that the factory is safe, councillors say that if the studies are rushed they will not receive the answers they want.

Parent Debbie Rogers, who has been an outspoken critic of a proposed education shake-up for Prestatyn, amid fears it could lead to the closure of Bodnant Infants, said she was happy with the council's new amalgamation plans for the site.

Bodnant Infants is one of seven schools in Prestatyn included in the Modernising Education Agenda, which could see some schools closed, amalgamated or re-structured.
