World Cup Have Your Say -

Africa calling

First there were five and now there is one. Ghana is the only African team to make the last 16.

I was reluctant at first to presume that Africans from other countries would be throwing their support behind Ghana but listeners to World Cup Have Your Say have made me think again.

This morning lovely Ghana fan Yaw came into our studio wearing a huge floppy Ghana hat and a flag draped round his middle. Within seconds of him speaking on air our phones were red hot with calls from all over Africa pledging their support to Yaw and his team. The SMS system kept crashing with messages from across Africa willing Ghana to beat Brazil.

Patrick Mamwa in Nairobi said:

Ghana is out to win so Brazil you better watch out. Go Black Stars - we are behind you.

Clarice from Sierra Leone said:

Congratulations Ghana. You are a winner.

So it looks as if I'm wrong and World Cup virgins Ghana have the huge weight of a continent's expectations on their shoulders.

Pele famously predicted an African team would win the World Cup by 2010. The tournament will be hosted in Africa that year that's for sure. But do you think an African team pull off a victory? Why is it that each World Cup we see a different crop of African teams? In 2002 it was Senegal. 1994 and 1998 it was Nigeria. Why does there appear to be such a lack of consistency? How healthy are the African domestic leagues? Are too many talented youngsters leaving their countries too early headed for Europe? Tomorrow we are dedicating our entire programme to African football and we want to know what YOU think. Please leave a comment below or email us with your thoughts. You never know you might end up on the radio.

African Football may be the wave of the future in the 21st Century.

I think [also] that Brazil VS Ghana will be a better game than the Italy VS Australia and Ukraine VS Switzerland.

Brazil and Ghana played a football which was superior to Italy VS Australia and Switzerland VS Ukraine.

I saw the first half in Ayestaran Restuarant [in Miami Florida] and everyone appeared to agree.

I saw the second half in Tower Cafe. Everyone had their eyes on the telly.

Maybe somethings should have been done. But Brazil has shown that it is a force to be reckoned with. Ghana has also shown that it will be a force to be reckoned with in 21st Century Football.

i think the Russian Referee Ivanov , must be ranked higher as he was the only referee who was totaly fair ,accurate, and none biased in his jugment.all of the yellow and red cards was fair and justfireble, the nedhalands deserved to lose that match, but shame on the FIF presdent who went into blaming the Russian Referee , iam totaly amased what the Fifa presidnt wanted , i will advise him to review that match , and he must apologise to his referee.

It is rather unfortunate that the Slovakian Referee who handled the Brazil v Ghana match is being allowed to handle another match. FIFA should put its feet on the ground and try to let justice prevail. Racism should be a thing of the past. All the offside goals were witnessed and FIFA takes no action about it. Fair play, please. In fact that referee and his linesmen who handled that match should never be allowed to handle any match. After allowing all the African teams to be robbed and eliminated, FIFA is now sacking referees. Why not during the 1st Round? Best teams can never emerge as winners so long as bad officiating prevails in FIFA tournaments. This is a disgrace to the soccer world! Cameroun was robbed not long ago in favour of another FIFA's favourite in the same competition. And it has just been the turn of Ghana. This is a stolen verdict indeed. After the poor African nations investing a lot of resources in the game as well as training and preparing so well, they come to the world cup finals only to be robbed. God save world soccer. If FIFA does not want African teams to participate in their tournaments, they should come out and say it, so that Africans will organize their own world cup.

I think the major reason why an African team will not win the World Cup is because African teams lack the discipline to win it.Look at what Almight Togo did, they qualified for the World cup instead of them to put in their best to market themselves to the whole world so that they can move to better clubs where they would be better paid, I think it was very unwise of them to get to the Big Stage and just be concentrating on money, the African Sydrome!!!. Other factor that may work against Africa is that If they real want to win the World Cup their best teams must qualify for the World Cup or their chances will be very slim.
And last but not the least most of our players have an attitude problem
many of them think they are to big or to good to play for their countries whereas they club colleagues put in everything when they are playing for their countries.
