Snapping Rooney as he bursts through

Ross Kinnaird is a sports photographer covering the World Cup for . He has been sharing some of his photos and the techniques behind them on our blog.

His latest guest entry shows Wayne Rooney muscling his way through the Ecuador defence.

England v Ecuador, 25 June 2006, Gottlieb-Daimler Stadium, Stuttgart, Germany. Rooney battles his way between two Ecuador defenders

This picture shows the tension of the match with the stifling heat and Ecuador's defence all thrown into the mix. I shot this on a 400mm lens, 640th of a second at 2.8, which was perfect to capture this particular shot. But it was a bit risky because if Rooney had carried on running towards the goal and looked set to score, I'd have had to act fast to change the settings on the camera to take the best possible image of the goal/shot. Everyone seems to have an opinion on the way England are performing - so here's mine! There's a striking similarity in the way our team is playing now compared to the England team of 1966 - both started off the World Cup tournament by playing some pretty ordinary football. But, as everybody knows, you can't win the World Cup in the first few weeks of the tournament, so things are really starting to heat up in Germany now we're through to play Portugal…

IF England win the world Cup, are all the people moaning now about lack of style going to sit indoors and not join in the celebrations?
I believe we will win, I have followed all world cups and Euros from 1970. We qualified for the knockouts after 2 group matches. We are now in the quarters and we will beat Portugal in 90 mins. Win it however you have to England, it will be one of the best moments of my life!

Scolari is a great coach but he is mad if he thinks that Deco's first yellow card should be recinded. Never mind yellow it should have been a straight red.
I think the dutch did not give the ball back to the portugese because of the unsporting behaviour of Figo just before, when he cheated to get the dutch defender sent off, so i do not blame Holland.

Thanks for the photo info. V interesting. How big is each picture that you take? How many MP is the camera? How many pics can you take before you have to change the storage card?

And can all those photographers at matches sell their work?
thanks!

Lets all hope you are right about England getting better as the tournament progresses. I think if we can beat portugal we have a good chance of going all the way.
