Sectarianism in Scottish football

Peter van Dyk | 13:07 UK time, Friday, 14 April 2006

Fifa has announced a crackdown on racist chanting in football stadia, which should come into effect in July, but Uefa has apparently decided that sectarian songs have been for so long there is nothing European football's governing body should do about it.

Is sectarianism as bad as racism, or was Uefa's disciplinary panel right to wash its hands of the issue?

Uefa investigated from Rangers fans during their Champions League ties with Villarreal, which the Scottish club lost on away goals.

The two main clubs in Glasgow, Rangers and Celtic, are traditionally supported by Protestants and Catholics, respectively.

The Scottish Football Association now says it will bring in for sectarian or racist chanting.

Will it work? Let us know. worldhaveyoursay@bbc.co.uk
