Is multiculturalism to blame for extremism?

Rabiya Parekh | 14:07 UK time, Tuesday, 15 August 2006

Despite a very extensive list of ideas from Peter this morning, we've decided to talk about today.

In an opinion editorial piece in today's , the Bishop of Rochester Michael Nazir-Ali talks about the link between multiculturalism and the rise of Islamic extremism amongst young British Muslims.

It got us thinking about the term multiculturalism, and what it means to people around the world. I would say here in the UK, it means people of different races living side by side with each other. Communities integrating and learning from each other.

But in Bishop Nazir-Ali's article he points to multicultrualism for not being able to deliver any of this, and is the partial cause for the

"present alienation of so many young people from the society in which they were born...".

So is that exclusive to Britain? Does multiculturalism work where you live? Is it, as Bishop Nazir-Ali says, to blame for the rise in Islamic extremism like we have seen in the UK?

Unfortunately the Bishop will not be able to join us on the programme tonight to take your calls but we will be joined by London play-write Parv Bancil who holds similar views.

Send us your questions and comments and we'll put them to him.
