Monday's Morning Meeting

Ros Atkins Ros Atkins | 11:49 UK time, Monday, 23 October 2006

A picture of this morning's meeting with listeners Steve and Justin on the phoneWe're just beginning today's Morning Meeting. Click here to find out how the meeting works and how to contribute, or read on to see what we're talking about today. We've David, Pete, Mark, Paul, Priya, Dicky (fresh back from Cuba) and Angela (who's with us for the day from )....

1055: Paul's first has highlighted a story I was thinking of as well - that women over 50 and that they should be allowed to have IVF treatment. Mark wonders if it's an issue around the world, or just certain Western countries. Priya adds that there's a moral element to this. It's not just a medical debate. I agree.

1100: Priya now raises a UK story that fear of young people increases the chances of attack. David points out that we did a very similar discussion quite recently so that's not going to make it. She also suggests we hear from some of you in Hungary as the .

1100: Pete's turn and he wants to return to Iraq. Is America trying to point more and more responsibility for the country's problems? And if it is , is that a bad thing? There's lots of Iraq talking points today. This what Tony Blair .

1100:More Iraq. This time from David. 'I seriously mispoke'. That's what Alberto Fernandez of the US state department has after his criticism of US efforts in Iraq. David's wondering if there's a broader discussion to be had about politicians and civil servants speaking out. Should politicians tow the party line the whole time?

1105: This is very exciting. Steve has just joined us from . After some introductions, Angela is suggesting a story about female genital mutilation. There's that says police and health authorities fear that 25,000 British girls are at risk of genital mutilation. Families who can't afford to fly back to africa or don't have passports are clubbing together and flying in 'old women' from villages in africa to perform the act. I'll dig the link out in a sec.

1105: Now Dicky who's wants us to talk about freakin' - that apparently is hitting California. Steve says he's not heard about it in Utah. I've heard Dicky sound more convinced to be honest.

1110: So what does Steve want to talk about? He's been looking at the Sydney Morning Herald and . He's seen a story that some of the men found guilty of the Bali bombings . He thinks people in Australia may well be angry about this. We all raise our eyebrows as we'd missed this one and it's definitely a good talking point.

1112: Mark's also keen on the Belgian MP who get on the booze when he won in elections the other day... just in you missed it, here ...

1115: Mark's not sure about the IVF story so what do we have left? He's suggesting that we could have have Iraq/US discussion pulling in various strands that have been mentioned above. I was also shocked to read that this month in Iraq than have done for two years.

11:30 And just as we're wrapping us, Justin has joined the meeting from the Arizona in the States. He thinks Americans would like to talk about Iraq and the US military tactics there. It's a debate that you've . So it seems Iraq is certain to make the show in one form or another.

It was a real thrill to have Justin and Steve joining us. I've never sat in an editorial meeting where listeners have been having an equal say. We've been doing it on air for a year, but it was brilliant to take that ethos into the meeting. If you'd like to join us tomorrow let us know. Thanks Steve and justin - you're good friends of the programme.

So there we have it... I'll post what we decide for the programme in a minute.
