What's your animal instinct?

Ros Atkins Ros Atkins | 15:33 UK time, Thursday, 23 November 2006

Hi there. Three subjects today. If you want to join us to talk about any of them let us know. First up, Bennie in Nigeria who wants to talk about witchcraft in African sport. Here's his email...

Greetings to everyone!
I want WHYS to have a discussion on the problem of witchcraft in sports, i.e. the use of witchcraft to influence match results. There's this report that was in the news a couple of days ago, that the Tanzanian FA handed down some punishment to two of the country's leading football clubs for the use of witchcraft to influence the result of games.
Here in Africa the use of witchcraft is widespread. People believe it works. Prominent among them are Togo, the Ivory Coast and even my native Nigeria.
Yours
Benedict Terfa Shishi (Makurdi, Benue State, Nigeria)

I've just spoken to Bennie and he's going to be coming onto the show to tell us more about the Tanzania story as well as asking you a few questions about where you stand on witchcraft and sport. what the guys over at the African football desk know.

WHERE DO ANIMALS FIT INTO OUR EQUATION?

We were talking about this earlier after the Dutch voted in two MPs representing the Party for Animals. It's the first time an animal-focused party has had an MP in Europe. So are we witnessing a fundamental shift in how we treat and relate to animals, or is just an electoral blip?

I remember reading an obituary of (the founder of the Vegan Society) last year where they quoted him explaining how he believed that the campaign for animal rights in the 20th century was the beginning of a long-term change in how animals fit into human society. Do you agree? And is that we're beginning to see in the Netherlands?

WHY ARE SOME GAY MEN TAKING CHANCES WITH HIV?

I was reading the newspaper on the bus this morning and was struck by an article in The Guardian about What really caught my eye was the fact that the rate of infection amongst gay men is higher than other parts of society.

A few calls this morning confirmed that this is a major talking point amongst the gay community here. So is this just a statistical quirk, or does it represent a cavalier attitude to safe sex among some gay men? Has the promotion of condoms that was so high profile in the 80s and 90s, been lost on a new generation of men?

I don't know the answer, but I've a feeling that we'll hear some different explanations tonight. If you'd like to contribute, email us your name and number.

Speak to you later.

  • Comment number 1.

    Two questions.
    1. If the USA. is the supplier of Cluster bombs, Phosphorous Bombs, Depleted Uranium bombs, and all other forms of mass destruction to Israel, did any one really expect them to support accusations against Israel?
    2. Shouldn't there be an enquiry into who the main Shareholders are in the Firms that manufacture these weopons of mass destruction?
