A new day dawns

Richard Bowen | 10:44 UK time, Friday, 5 January 2007

Morning Blog fans. Well after yesterdays obvious lead story the waters are some what murkier today. But seen as we've got the whole world to play with it's just a case of looking! Here's what we've got for ya'll today...

First up, we go to the US, more specifically, New York, where the talk of the town is . He's been named the 'New York Subway hero' (a title which he refutes) after he flung himself in front of a train to save a boy who'd fallen on the tracks. We want to know if you've ever put your life on the line to save someone else? Would you call it heroism, or just doing the right thing? Have you ever witnessed anyone perform an act of heroism? Would you have done the same? Tell us your stories.

Next up, a new film about the former Uganda dictator, , called "The Last King of Scotland" will be hitting screens soon. The film is one in a long list of films about Africa that has gained both critical acclaim and box office success. But it seem that the one thing films like this and , have in common is they reflect the negative side of Africa. So, i'm asking does it have to be bad news from Africa that makes big box office hits? Or does hollywood just love bad news, where ever it's from?

Is there now some light at the end of the tunnel in the conflict between and ? Well, those at the helm of being held in today will certainly hope so. US, European and African Union envoys are examining options with the leaders of Somali's transitional government to bring an end to the fighting. Is talking the best way to bring an end to the violence? If not, how can peace be brought to the region?

The Democrats have officially taken charge of Congress and, according to the Boston Globe, have ushered in a new era of politics by electing to one of the nation's top political jobs. But does it really matter that it's a woman taking over? Is this really important? Or is just something that the media likes to latch onto in the same way as we did when became the first female solo news anchor? Love to hear your thoughts on this one.
