The WHYS daily email

Ros Atkins Ros Atkins | 13:20 UK time, Tuesday, 16 January 2007

I write the WHYS daily email after we've chosen the stories of the day. It's sent out around 1400GMT every week day (but don't hold me to that time), and will contain details of the discussions on the show, as well as info on upcoming trips, or particular programmes we're planning. We want to make it as easy as possible for you to get involved in the show.

So if you'd like to receive it, send me a message and I'll add you to the list right away. And don't worry, your address will go no further than my PC. No-one else will see it, and if you want to be taken off the list, I'll do it the second I hear from you.

West African Journeys - Part One

Listening to this, the American expression about the elephant in the room that nobody comments on came strongly to mind.
There are other cultures which routinely practice infanticide as a means of population control. They are where people are living at the margin of resources - the well-known example being the Inuit, where 'excess' babies are left to die in the snow. Could this be the case in Northern Ghana - can it be that if the 'spirit baby' survives infancy, others may indeed die of malnutrition. Why no comment on this in the programme? Is there a (self?) censorship on discussion of overpopulation issues and whether infanticide, under whatever guise, is the traditional control means, which the well-meaning are interfewring in without getting at the root issues - avialability and promotion of contraception and education of women.

It may be these issues will be dealt with in later programmes but the lack of even a mention in this one left a big factual hole.
