Tonight in Portland
We London-based WHYSers have just had a chat with the team in Portland and have a rough outline of what we think Oregonians will want to talk about tonight. However, we can never be sure what listeners want to say. As Ros has mentioned, once you turn on that tap, you better be ready for the gush . . . .
H20
. . . which watery mutterings lead nicely onto one of the topics we'll be broaching tonight. Namely . We think this is something of a talking point in Oregon as there are a lot of dams and quite a bit of debate about whether to sell the blue stuff to the South. Some googling has revealed to me the delightful fact that there is a river in Oregon called Donner Und Blitzen (Thunder and Lightning). Check it out on the US Government flood warning site (it's near the bottom right). Is enough being done to tackle the global water crisis? Do you think there is a global water crisis? Nicola reckons that this topic might be a bit er, dry, for WHYS but I realise now she only said that to impress me with her jokemaking.
Iraq
It's always difficult to debate Iraq from anything like a fresh perspective but there have been developments today about which even the ´óÏó´«Ã½'s most seasoned Iraq watcher, Hugh Sykes, is cautiously optimistic. There may be between certain insurgent groups and the Iraqi government. Is this a good idea? The Iraqi international affairs director for the Ministry of National Dialogue and Reconciliation, Saad Musef Al Mutalabi, compared the situation with how the British government negotiated with the IRA all those years ago. Do you agree with his parallel? We'll see what the good folks of Portland think this afternoon.
Harlem
We all agreed that revisiting last night's raucous debate from Harlem was well worth doing on tonight's Portland show. We think it will be interesting to see what a predominantly white, middle-class area like Portland thinks about the attitudes, opinions and nifty one-liners (courtesy of NY Oil) of the folks in Harlem.
Accentuate the positive
A posh British actor, Stephen Fry, thinks Americans are by a cut-glass upper-class British accent. This thinks Fry's got it all wrong. Portland . . . whaddya think?
John Edwards
John Edwards is scheduled to make an annoucement concerning his wife's battle against cancer at 12 EST today in North Carolina. This is shortly before we go on air at the Bagdad cafe (Oi! Oregon. Don't you know it's rude to drop your haitches?). This has a few ideas about what could be coming up. Mr Edwards announced he was running for President in December '06, whatever he says today, what will it mean for the Dem's campaign? Portland will let us know.
