The "big business" of kidnapping

| 09:25 UK time, Friday, 6 July 2007

Unlike the parents of Madeleine McCann, Mike and Oluchi Hill know exactly where their missing child is. She's in the hands of kidnappers in the Niger Delta, who have said they will swap the three year old child for her Father. What they're really after is money though, kidnapping is becoming in Nigeria. In previous cases it was foreign oil workers who had been taken hostage but in recent months the children of wealthy Nigerians had also become targets. Listeners in Nigeria have told WHYS about the problem, before, and we touched on it in one of our shows from there. I'm sure we will speak to people in the area today.

Red Mosque
"A battle for the soul of Pakistan" continues to rage in Islamabad. has written about the impact of the crisis on President Musharraf, which we could investigate on the programme today....

Vicky wrote last week about the impact of abortion in Kenya. We still haven't discussed it on the programme yet, but we have made contact with some very frightened young ladies there who are willing to talk to us about their experiences.

Had enough of global gigs?
Loyal listener Ken in Cleveland called the show yesterday to say he certainly is. Live Earth takes place tomorrow, in several countries across the world, in a bid to raise awareness of global warming. The Arctic Monkeys are among those in the music industry to question the merits of the concerts. Drummer Matt Helders said:

Since the stage lighting alone would be enough to power 10 houses, it's all very hypocritical

Fair point - what do you think? Are you going? Or do you agree with Ken?

Seven wanders
The Vatican has said that a new internet poll to find the seven wanders of the world is .

"How they can they possibly exclude from the wonders of the world a masterpiece like the Sistine Chapel, which last year alone had over four million visitors?"

The shortlist includes includes the Angkor Wat temples in Cambodia, the Alhambra in Granada, the Kiyomizu Temple in Japan, Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany, the Statue of Liberty in New York and the ancient city of Timbuktu in Mali.

Does religion have eny impact on the choices? Send us your nominations...
