Mr & Mrs Clinton: The End?

Post categories:

Robin Lustig | 08:24 UK time, Tuesday, 8 January 2008

I know it's probably not in the best taste to speculate about these things, but am I the only one wondering about the fate of the Clintons' marriage if Hillary's presidential campaign ends in failure? I can't help but ask whether one of the things that has kept them together has been her determination to try to get back to the White House in her own right -- and even if voters had been prepared to elect a female president, I doubt that a divorced female president would have been considered a viable option.

But it's early days, of course, and whatever happens in New Hampshire tonight, I doubt that she's ready to quit just yet.

What incredible irony it would be if Hillary Clinton, the archetypical new Democrat liberal baby boomer "It Takes a Village of DC Idiots To Make The Strongest Nation in the World Vulnerable to 19 Terrorists with Box Cutter Knives In a Fools Paradise" married to a man who is supposed to be the savviest politician in the country is ultimately done in by an African American who out-Clintons the Clintons at their own game. Charm, charisma, intelligence, and not one clue as to how to run the United States of America, he has stolen the hearts and minds of the most naive voters she was counting on to win, they being as vulnerable to him as they were supposed to be to her (the devil you don't know is better than the devil you do?) What can she do except fight back seemingly helplessly against the next wave in the tide she had previously come in on herself. Time, tide, and becoming an old has-been wait for no man...or woman.

What will she do if her hopes for becoming the ruling Suzerain are dashed this time? She'd have had a far better chance had she run in 2004 even if she lost then and then came back now to say "I told you so" but she never anticipated Obama, just as George Bush Senior never anticipated Clinton. Frankly, I think her best chances this time are yet to come when Edwards is clearly eliminated from the race. She should make a deal with him by offering him a slot as VP on her ticket if he throws his support to her. Between the two of them they have a shot at deflating Obama's balloon. Edwards is also still living in a fools paradise, he doesn't get it yet. But Super Tuesday on February 5 will clear up much of the fog revealing a lot more about which way the political forces in America are really headed as they will be far more in evidence. Should all else fail, she could bide her time and wait for 2012 or even 2016 if things go really badly and Obama serves two terms (and the world is still around) as a kind of American Lady Thatcher/elder stateswoman. Or she could just go berserk, blame the whole thing on Monica Lewinsky for screwing up her life and play the traditional role of the woman scorned taking her revenge with a sawed-off shotgun. Sometimes they do kill their husbands though going out with a bang, at least in fiction. I don't see her and her enormous ego as just fading away into the mist of history. She might just push Brittany Spears off the front page of the newspapers. Heaven help us from lawyers, especially the ones who go into politics.

What a difference a day makes...at least in American politics.

I agree! The prolonging the Clinton’s sham of a marriage is everything to do with the coefficient of power in majority voting as in ((2n)!/(22nn!2)
Bet Maker says that Dennis Kucinich is a 200 - 1 long shot because he is married to a much younger taller foreign woman with a tongue piercing.

The next new repackaged president, will do a lot of smiling waiving and praying that the Chinese don’t dump the dollar.

Boycott Coca-Cola and have a nice day!
