Eat insects, save the world ...
There is a theory that we could help to save the planet by eating insects. It goes like this: two-thirds of the world's farmland is used for the raising of livestock, it generates about a fifth of all the greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change -- so if we ate less beef and pork and chicken, we could help reduce the emission of greenhouse gases.
And if we ate more insects, we could get at least some of our protein from that source. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation is currently considering a policy paper on insect-eating, even though in parts of Africa and Asia, it's already quite common.
There happens to be a in London which already has insects on the menu, so -- yes, I did -- I went along to have a taste.
I tried the bug salad (locusts and crickets, lightly fried and crunchy) and then the chocolate-covered scorpions.
