Keeping exotic pets
Pets can make good companions and returning home to a loving dog can be great! But with more of us opting for something a bit more unusual, looking after them can be tricky.

Lance Jepson is an exotic pet vet who works out of several surgeries across south west Wales. According to Lance, we're keeping more exotic animals than ever before, with reptiles being especially popular.
He thinks this is because of increased availability and a certain kind of kudos in 'having something different'. And with people's lifestyles changing, Lance thinks many don't have the time to look after a dog and regularly walk it, so turn to other species.
So, if you are thinking of taking on an exotic pet, here's Lance's advice on what to consider before you buy:
- Do your research. And when you think you've researched it enough, research it again.
- Be realistic. If you've only got a small garden, don't think about having a tapir!
- Take into account all the costings involved; purchasing the animal, but also the maintenance costs.
- If things don't go to plan, try to find yourself a good vet.

It seems to me that there is enough for organisations such as the to deal with in terms of 'ordinary' animals never mind dealing with these complex creatures. In my opinion, they should be left in the wild where they belong, or in very high quality Zoo environments where we can all enjoy them.
