Mumford & Sons have given us something unexpected tonight. Their contribution to Ray Davies' new collaborative compilation is just another reason why so many people rate this band. Which leads us nicely to Mumford & Sons And Friends coming up on Radio 1 on October 11th. Go to the Radio 1 website for details.
It's been a familiar demo amongst discerning music fans online for a while now. And a live favourite as well. So it comes as a nice surprise that James Blake's cover of Fiest's 'Limit To Your Love' has been chosen as the first proper single from his forthcoming debut album. This is a wonderful and spacious performance, impecably produced and perfectly paves the way for a very exciting talent in the new year.
There is definitely a distinctive sound coming out of the Chase And Status camp right now. And this extends to their record label, MTA, and its principal signing, Nero. 'Me & You' sounds like a show/album opener and certainly sets the bar for next year's debit album. Rock n' Step, Dub n Roll, whatever you want to call it, here it is:
Tinie Tempah understands the importance of right now and all the hard work he's put into it. And so do we, which is why we dedicated tonight's Hottest Record to the official opening of his forth-coming album - Disc-Overy. Because Tinie is a UK superstar and a ferocious rapper combined. Written in the Stars indeed.
A very late addition for us, heard in our listening meeting this afternoon then straight onto the show! they've been making really interesting electronic dance music for some time now but also with a rock edge. listen now.
Tonight something completely unheard of in the Hottest Record Department. An early airing for the new My Chemical Romance single 'Na na na'. Yes, we buckled under pressure in anticipation laid on thick by a world of My Chemical Romance fans. For good reason, as this single restarts the motor with a bang. Catchy as anything!
Many other artists would not have had the music to back up such an extensive lead time on a new album. Chase & Status just seem to go from strength to strength on tune for tune. Tonight's hottest record with the legendary 'Tempa T' practically invents a new genre. I'll let you come up with the name...
Tonight's hottest record marks the start of a week for us loosely dedicated to the finest in UK beats. The road to ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio 1Xtra Live is paved with bangers including this one from Wretch 32. 'Traktor' is full of good ideas all expertly delivered.
There's nothing much to say really, quite simply the biggest remix of the year...
It could so easily have been the Shy FX remix of 'Hustle On'. But with a simple flip of the coin, in the end the hottest record fell to Steve Angello's considered remix for Magnetic Man. Good to hear the SHM boys using their own individual remixes and tunes to go a bit deeper.
Trust DJ Shadow. It could end there really, but to elaborate, you can not only trust DJ Shadow to deliver exceptional music, but also to pay attention to detail. Which is why he has left personalised copies of this new 12" on vinyl around select record stores. A treasure hunt indeed, timeless in every sense.
Hey you little parsnips, Huw here in for Zane. Back once again with another hot new one, Kanye is on a roll these days; in the studio, on twitter, and onstage as witnessed at the Video Music Awards recently. Piano led and all in all uplifting, Good Friday rolls along with that classic beat that only Kanye could dig up, and bodes well for his album 'Good Ass Job' which has Common and Kid Cudi on it amongst others.
Back to the A-List for tonight's hottest record, as Kings of Leon react to their most successful year the only way they could, by digging deeper and going darker. 'Radioactive' is a perfect Kings of Leon single in that it carries enough hook for the festival crowd but covers enough 'Aha Shake' for the dedicated. Five albums down the line and so far no bumps.
After an amazing night last night in the company of Brandon Flowers. We follow with another solo outing.
Woah!... Hang on a minute; we're not supposed to call it that. With this, Paul Smith wants everyone to know he's still a member of Maximo Park but this music is different and needs to exists on its own terms. And he's right, as we can all hear, on his debut 'not solo single' - 'Our Lady of Lourdes'. Deeper, darker and downright brilliant. It's tonight's Hottest Record.
Fresh slice of D'n'b from the Sigma duo, doing the rounds wtih Annie Mac and MistaJam who have always been big supporters. If more into the Sub Focus, 'Follow The Light' vibe, then it's guaranteed this will serve your ears well. Enjoy
Linkin Park have promised a fresh sound on their new album, but we hear that alot from muscicians trying to galvanise their audience once more. Tonight's Hottest Record is a refreshing reminder that some bands really mean it. 'Wretched And Kings' couldn't be more different, for a band who have built a huge audience by treading a well-known path. It is tough, brave, and in our opinion a truely deserving Hottest Record.
Kanye West was supposed to join us in the studio today. But he didn't. No matter cause we got ourselves a Hottest Record out of Yeezy which also features Jay-Z, Rick Ross, a star turn from Nicki Minaj and most interestingly of all beats by Bon Iver. Only Kanye can make this work. It's a 'Monster'
