As an historian in the coal field, writer and painter, Brian was in a position to help coal mining communities make the most of their artistic talents during the 1984-85 strike.

He helped men and women on the path to publishing their own books written about their own experiences during the time of the strike.

In his home town of Castleford he saw women, in particular, taking on new roles and new challenges.

He worked with artists and painters and saw himself as a "catalyst" or "community gopher".
