Boleyn-wood: a tale of two sisters

The Other Boleyn Girl saw the creme de la creme, Hollywood's hotlist, and the most glittery of the glitterati descend on Ely in August to put the country's smallest city well and truly on the celluloid map.

When Ely Cathedral closes its doors to the public, you know something big's going down. And in August it did just that as the cameras rolled for the final scenes of听 major Hollywood blockbuster, The Other Boleyn Girl, which is out in cinemas from Friday 7th March.

Eric Bana

Eric Bana plays Henry VIII

The film tells the story of Anne Boleyn and her sister Mary - and their competition for the affections of our porkiest patriarch, King Henry VIII - you know, he of the big neck ruffle and equally big belly.

Naturally, your local 大象传媒 team was eager to get a look-in with stars such as Scarlett Johansson, Natalie Portman, Eric Bana and Kristen Scott-Thomas rumoured to be turning up to deliver their lines.

Five film companies, numerous emails and phone calls later and we finally got... nowhere. Zilch. Nada. A closed set. Ho hum. Does Scarlett not know who I am, I ask myself??

However, not to be outdone by the paparazzi - who spent a full three days with their frankly, embarrassingly large lenses pointing through the fences set up around the cathedral - we went along anyway - just in case, you know? Nothing ventured, nothing gained as they say.

And the result? A lot of pictures of big white trucks and portaloos. But, such pristine trucks! And I bet they have nice soft toilet rolls in those sturdy latrines.

Meanwhile, 大象传媒 Radio Cambridgeshire secured a bit of a chat with a local chappy who plays an extra in the movie. All dolled-up in sack-cloth and a big hat, Councillor Michael Allan plays a bishop in the film - tough work in 20 degrees heat - and, although his contract prevents him from naming names, he says he WAS on set with the stars - oh the sweaty glamour of it all!

Listen to Michael talking to 大象传媒 Radio Cambridgeshire's Antonia Brickell on Drive, here:

Meanwhile, we had another ace up our sleeve.

Johnny Dee as Henry VIII

Johnny Dee as Henry VIII

Spookily enough, Johnny Dee, a regular on the station is almost the double of BOTH Henry VIII AND Eric Bana, the Aussie actor who plays the role of the king in the film. How convenient is that?

AND, Johnny also happened to have his codpiece handy - which always adds authenticity to such moments. Although, it has to be said, that this is probably the first time that said codpiece has legally seen the light of day before the 9pm watershed.

大象传媒 Radio Cambridgeshire's Mid-morning Show sent Johnny out onto the streets of Ely to see what locals thought about their cathedral starring as a double for Westminster Palace.

We can only apologise for the sight of Mr Dee, his well-rounded tummy, and tam-o-shanter. BUT, we have to say, he's the spitting image of Eric Bana, the star of The Other Boleyn Girl - don't you think?

Or, more like Eric Banana, perhaps?

Have Your Say

Should the cathedral have closed for filming? Should Scarlett have let me in? So many questions, so little time...

If they pay a good fee towards restoration funds, then why not...
