A small-town preacher leaves his comfortable life in the country to spread the biblical word to some of the most vicious gangsters in New York City. It's a true story from the 1950s that is summed up by the production's poster, depicting gangster Nicky Cruz hovering a knife over the hand of David Wilkerson. Knife-toting Nicky Cruz Wilkerson took his religious ideals to the Big Apple in order to stem the violence of the city's gangs and later wrote a book which shipped 50 million copies. Showing at the Mumford Theatre in Cambridge and the Maltings Theatre in Ely The Cross and the Switchblade is the stage performance of Wilkerson's autobiography. The play, which originally toured in 2001 and 2002 with a different cast, has appeared as a guest during the RSC's Swan Theatre visiting season as well as featuring along the east coast of America.
