Bridgetower - photo by Keith Pattison Opera, babes?By Paul Seagrove, 大象传媒 Cambridgeshire English Touring Opera will be warbling through some magnificent romps at the Cambridge Arts Theatre this week. Tighten your corset and join them... Events to mark the bicentenery of the passing of the Act of Parliament that led to the end of the Slave Trade continue in Cambridge this week.听 Jeni Bern in Teseo English Touring Opera return to the Arts Theatre with a new production specially written to jazz music. "Bridgetower" tells the story of the eighteenth century black violinist George Polgreen Bridgetower.听 The talented player was the son of an African prince and a white European woman and regularly performed for the Prince Regent at the Royal Pavilion in Brighton.听 He also became close friends with the great Ludwig van Beethoven.听 The ETO production features music from the Julian Joseph Big Band and stars the jazz singer Cleveland Watkiss. Following last season's highly successful Baroque programme, the company are also bringing Handel's "Teseo" and Haydn's "Country Matters" to Cambridge.听 The two operas are very different from each other鈥eseo is based on the Greek myth of Theseus, although the focus of the story is the embittered Medea.听 Country Matters is described as a Regency romp.听 It follows two women, with differing characteristics, in their search for true love. Both operas will be performed with classical and early baroque instruments. Catch the shows...Bridgetower will be performed at the Arts Theatre on Tuesday 23rd October only.听 Teseo will be performed on Wednesday 24th and Saturday 27th October. And you can catch Country Matters on Thursday 25th and Friday 26th October.听 All performances are at 7.30 pm.听 For tickets, call the Arts Theatre Box Office on 01223 503333.
