School Report in Cambridgeshire 2009

Find out what's happening in Cambridgeshire and which schools will be 'making the news' on School Report Day on Thursday 26th March.

What is news, who makes it and what does a journalist do?

Thursday 26th March is 大象传媒 News School Report Day, a national campaign giving students the chance to find out what news is and how it's prepared for a news bulletin, be it for TV, radio or online.

Schools across Cambridgeshire are getting their students involved by giving them a chance to prepare and present features about news that is important to them.

Patrick Davies takes a look at Ely College

"No Patrick, you do it like this..."

大象传媒 staff are volunteering their time and experience to mentor the students, giving them advice about interviewing, writing and editorial issues. Plus showing them how to edit audio and video packages.

Getting ahead of the game on Wednesday are the students at Longsands School in St Neots. They will be writing newspaper reports, creating their own "comic life" series, producing audio as well as making video footage, all with the help of our Breakfast producer Alex Pope.

Alex says "It's wonderful to see the next generation of journalists taking such an active role in news. It's amazing to see what they can achieve on the day and what stories they're interested in. I can't wait to be involved and as a 大象传媒 producer be on hand to offer what help and assistance I can."

One lucky Longsands student, Sam, is going to London to work with network reporter Paul Rowley who can often be heard on breakfast shows.

On Thursday more 大象传媒 Cambridgeshire and 大象传媒 Look East staff will be mentoring students at other schools across the county.

Sue Dougan will be our 'School Reporter' at Ely Community College where the students have partnered up with students from Witchford Village College to produce news for their websites. Sue will report on the stories they'll be covering and their progress.

Our 2pm radio news bulletin will feature some of the content produced by different schools around the county and students will be discussing and debating topics that are important to them in Sue's Afternoon Show Chat Room.

Students at the Thomas Deacon Academy in Peterborough will be mentored by 大象传媒 Radio 5 Live reporter Stephen Chittenden.

Other schools getting involved are:

  • Abbey College, Ramsey
  • Impington Village College
  • Sawtry Community College
  • Sir Harry Smith Community College, Whittelsey
