Food, friendship and fun... from St Faith's to Makukhanye

Pupils from St Faith's School in Cambridge are going on a special trip this Easter, to hand over 拢20,000 that they raised for their partner school in South Africa!

For the last 18 months, children and parents at St Faith's have been busy raising funds for a small school 6000 miles away in a South African township.

From penny collections to auctions and ceilidh dances, the students have raised a massive 拢20,000 for the Makukhanye School, which will provide a hot meal for every child at the school for the next two years!

Twenty five children from St Faith's will head to their partner school in Jeffreys Bay to deliver their cheque and gifts in person. And members of the cricket and netball teams will also be playing a series of fixtures against local school teams in South Africa.

"The complete poverty in South Africa was a shock, and yet the happiness that people were able to radiate, with nothing, was amazing."

Linda Dennis, Deputy Head (Pastoral)

St Faith's has had a close relationship with Makukhanye School since 2002 when they raised funds to help build a hall which accommodates the entire school and incorporates a medical centre.

The money raised recently will provide hot meals for the 720 pupils at the school. Tim North, head of PE at St Faith's explains "拢500 will feed 720 children three hot meals a week for one month. That is just six pence per meal."

The pupils from St Faith's are looking forward to learning about the lives of the children in South Africa and building new friendships.

Setting off on 25th March, they'll be recording their experience and chatting to the Makukhanye students using audio equipment and digital cameras. We'll be featuring their reports and photos in the next few weeks.
