He was awarded two Oscars and shot many acclaimed films including the African Queen, Sons and Lovers, and the Red Shoes.
Born in 1914 to parents from a music hall background, Jack Cardiff started his show business life as an actor in silent films and moved on to become one of the industry's leading cinematographers. He was chosen to be one of Technicolor's first trainees and in 1937 he worked on Wings of The Morning, the first Technicolor movie shot in Britain. His first Oscar was for shooting Black Narcissus, the Powell and Pressburger classic. He also worked on The Red Shoes, A Matter of Life and Death, The African Queen, The Prince and the Showgirl, and Sons and Lovers. Dustin Hoffman presented Cardiff with his Oscar Talking to 大象传媒 Look East's Jason Horton in 2001, Jack said "the thing about Black Narcissus was that it was a cameraman's dream because the whole guts of the story was that these nuns tried to build a convent in the Himalayas and they failed because the Himalayas were too beautiful... so it had to be too beautiful." Cardiff worked with some of the movie greats including Marilyn Monroe, Sophia Loren, Lauren Bacall and Audrey Hepburn.
His accolades also include an OBE and a Bafta Special Award. The filmmaker was also presented with an Honorary Oscar in 2001. Cardiff was with his family at his home in Ely when he died.
