Open Cambridge, Friday 11th - Sunday 13th September 2009Cambridge is home to some spectacular architecture, fantastic art collections and beautiful gardens. Often they appear to be hidden away - behind closed doors or tucked away in one of the city's meandering, mysterious passages. You might even walk past some of these hidden gems every day without realising they're there! Art and sculpture in the colleges Open Cambridge is a weekend of tours, talks and open access in which University and College buildings and collections will go on show for families, local residents and community groups. It's your chance to discover what the University of Cambridge has contributed in the past to our society in scholarship, culture and architecture, and the contributions it continues to make today. You will be able to meet University and college members face to face and find out about Cambridge's role on a local and global scale over the past 800 years. Exploring University buildings Tours cover topics such as the history, architecture, art and gardens of College and University buildings. Plus you'll be able to explore exciting collections and manuscripts as college and departmental libraries open their doors to the public. Tours include: Darwin College and family portraits; the architecture and growth of the Fitzwilliam Museum; Hughes Hall from revolutionary teaching college to the Blues' Nest; Women's education, literary heritage and the gardens of Newnham College; Cambridge University Library Gilbert Scott's building and many more.... Talks include: Medieval to modern - 800 years of architecture in Cambridge; Honor Ridout's local history - town and gown 800 years ago; and Opening the lid on the Fitzwilliam Museum amongst other fascinating topics. All the Open Cambridge talks and tours are free, but must be booked in advance. Downing College During a series of workshops led by visual artist Nikki Goldup, participating groups explored Cambridge's academic history and their conceptions of Cambridge in 2009. On display will be textiles, painting and photography, writing and sound bites recorded during the project. This will form a future legacy and explore what it is to be a Cambridge resident, making art in 2009. Bridge the Gap Charity WalkFor a chance to visit several different colleges in one day, you might want to take part in the Bridge the Gap Charity Walk which takes place on Sunday 13th September. It's a 4.5 mile walk through the beautiful Cambridge colleges, and last year 2500 walkers raised over 拢42,000 for local charities.
