Make the 2019 Blue Peter Christmas Card

Every year on Blue Peter, we love to inspire you to make an incredible homemade Christmas card that will amaze your family and friends. This year, we have a super cool flip book card for you to try. Get crafting!

You will need
  • 2 x A4 black card
  • 1 x A4 white card
  • 1 x A4 green card
  • Our Santa and reindeer template (download below and print out)
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Marker pen
  • Glue / double sided tape
  • Hole punch

Step one - make the basic card

Take a piece of A4 card and fold in half, to create the basic Christmas card shape.

Step two - make the pull out tab

  • Take another piece of A4听card in the same colour.

  • Cut a strip about 5cm wide, down the long side of the card.

  • At one end of the strip of card measure in 6cm, and then mark a line. Then mark lines every 1cm for a further 6cm.

  • Once you have done that make a fold along each line. This is what the pages of your flip book will stick to, and the folds help them turn.

Step three - make the pages

  • To make the pages cut out 6 rectangles that are 5x6cm from the same piece of card.

  • Apply glue or double sided tape in each of the 1cm sections marked out earlier, then stick down one edge of each flap into those sections.

Step four - fixing down the mechanism

  • Cut out an 8x8cm square from the spare card.

  • Place the flip book strip on the front of the main card, unfolded flat, with the pages on the right.

  • Place the square of card on top of the flip book strip, then bend the folded end of the strip over, so that a 1-2cm section of it overlaps onto the square. Stick this overlapped part of the strip onto the square.

  • Turn the flip book strip and square over. The strip should completely cross the 8cm square on this side, with only two thin strips of the square showing at the top and bottom. Apply glue or double sided tape to these thin strips.

  • Turn over the strip and square, position on the main card, and press down. The mechanism should now be secure on the front of the card, but the strip should be able to be pulled out to the left and pushed back in easily.

Step five - decorating the pages and the tab

  • Colour in Santa and the reindeer, and cut them out. Working from the top page down, leave both sides of the first page blank. Stick the eight reindeer onto both sides of the next four pages. Then stick Santa onto the top side of the sixth page.

Top tip: make sure you stick your reindeer as far over to the right of the page as possible this will make sure you can't see the reindeer behind it when it is folded flat.

  • On the other side of the Santa page, write your Christmas message. We've cut out a dust cloud from white paper, to show how fast the reindeer are going, and written our message onto that.

  • Stick the small Santa and reindeer in a row onto the tab. Again, stick it over to the right hand side, so Santa cannot be seen when the tab is slid inside.

Step six - decorate the front of the card

Finally, create a snowy scene with white card. Make sure it is the correct height to fit under the mechanism.

We used a hole punch, to create small white circles of paper, to stick to the front of the card as snow. Then we cut out little green triangles, and stuck them onto the snowy hill, for trees.
