Eggy teeth experiment
Can your teeth survive this experiment in one piece? Using a hard-boiled egg, Dr Chris and Dr Xand demonstrate how sugar can break down the surface of your teeth... just like an egg shell!
- Cola
- Fruit juice
- Vinegar
- Water
- 4 hard-boiled eggs
- 4 glasses
- Toothbrush
- Toothpaste
Instructions
Step 1: Place each egg in a glass carefully so you don't crack the shell.
Step 2: Pour cola over an egg and fill the glass.
Step 3: Do the same with orange juice, vinegar and water in separate glasses.
Step 4: Leave the glasses overnight.
Step 5: Use a spoon to remove the egg from the cola and rinse it in the sink.
Step 6: Take your toothpaste and brush and try to clean the egg. What do you notice about the shell?聽You'll see the egg is stained or it might be cracked.
Step 7: Next, take the egg from the orange juice and clean in with water. Use your finger to rub the shell.
Step 8: Look at the egg in vinegar next. You might see it is covered in bubbles, because the strong acid of the vinegar will be dissolving the egg shell at a faster rate than the cola or orange juice. Rinse the egg and see what happens when you rub the shell.
Step 9: Finally, compare the egg in water. The surface of the shell should be drastically different to the other eggs in the experiment.
