Optical illusion experiment
Don't believe your eyes in this eye-popping experiment! Dr Chris and Dr Xand teach you how to trick your eyes with an optical illusion that's more than it seems!
- Light-coloured card
- EITHER some string or wool
- OR a straw or pencil
- Colouring pens
- Circular bowl or plate
- Scissors
- Glue
- Wall tack
- Pointy pen
Instructions
Step 1: If using, get a grown-up to help you cut the front and back off your cereal box.
Step 2: Use the bowl and a pen to draw two circles of card.
Step 3: Cut the circles out with a grown-up to help.
Step 4: Draw two pictures (one on each circle) that you want to blend together.
Dr Chris drew a mole on one circle and hole on the other. Dr Xand drew a loo and a poo! But don't worry, your items don't have to rhyme!听
Step 5: Next glue the discs together so they are back to back, with the pictures facing outwards.
Step 6a: Sandwich a pen or a straw between the discs so you can spin them.
Step 6b: Instead of a straw, you can use string to flip the pictures. Use a pen and wall tack to punch a hole through each side of the discs and thread some string through the two holes, and tie securely.
Step 7a: Use your straw and roll it between both of your palms to flip the pictures back and forth.
Step 7b: Or use the string and wind it up, letting it spin the two pictures when you let it go. Take a look at the video for guidance.
