Sebastiaan's South African Bobotie
Help your child make Sebastiaan's tasty bobotie with this quick and simple recipe. Serves 5.
- 5 spring onions cut into chunks
- 1 dessert spoons (dsp) of vegetable oil
- 1 small grated courgette (around 160g)
- Small Red bell pepper
- 1 teaspoon (tsp) turmeric
- 1 tsp ground coriander
- 350g cooked minced beef
- 1 tsp garlic puree
- 1 tsp ginger puree
- 400g tin chopped tomatoes
- 3 heaped dsp spicy chutney
- 1tsp cumin seeds
- 2 bay leaves
- 250ml milk
- 2 medium eggs
- 4 – 5 grinds black pepper
Method

Put the chopped spring onion and grated courgette into a lidded casserole with 1dsp of vegetable oil
Measure in the turmeric and ground coriander
Pop the pepper then pull it apart and tear into small pieces. Add to the casserole with the onion mixture and stir everything together. Cover with the lid
Ask a grown up to put the casserole in the oven for 10 mins at 200°C
Take the mince from the fridge and add the garlic puree, ginger puree, chutney and the tinned tomatoes to the bowl
Tip the cumin seeds into a pestle and mortar and grind into a powder (or use a bowl and the end of a rolling pin), spoon into the mince mixture
Add the mince mixture to the cooked and cooled onion mixture in a shallow oven dish (about 1.5 L capacity), and stir everything together
Level the mixture using the back of a spoon. Push in 2 bay leaves
Break an egg into a mug and check for shell. Add it to the milk. Repeat with the second egg. Wipe your hands
Add 4 grinds of black pepper to the milk and eggs then whisk the mixture all together well with a fork
Pour the milk mixture gently over the top of the mixture in the dish
Ask a grown up to put the dish in the oven for 30 mins at 200 °C till the top is a lovely golden brown and the Bobotie is bubbling
Allow to cool a little then remove bay leaves and serve
