Paper Cup Rocket

Join The Let's Go Club and find out how to make your very own space rocket! Three, two, one... Blast off!

You will need
  • Two paper cups
  • Coloured card
  • Bowl
  • Pencil
  • Marker pen
  • Scissors (grown-up use only)
  • Sticky tape
  • Glue
  • A two pound coin
  • A one pence coin (penny)
  • Coloured tissue paper (red, orange, yellow)
  • Rubber bands

Instructions

  • Place a bowl onto the card, draw around it, and ask a grown-up to help you cut out a circle shape

Ìý

  • Fold the circle in half, fold it in half again, and then unfold it

Ìý

  • Ask a grown-up to help you cut out a quarter of the circle by cutting along the folds

Ìý

  • Cut the quarter circle shape in half to make the rocket’s wings

Ìý

  • Fold over the edges of the wings to help you attach them to the rocket later

Ìý

  • Take what’s left of the circle and overlap the two ends to make a cone, then stick them together

Ìý

  • Stick the cone to the top of the paper cup

Ìý

  • On the leftover card draw around the penny and the two pound coin, and ask a grown-up to help cut them out

Ìý

  • Stick the circles to the cone with glue so they look like windows!

Ìý

  • Use sticky tape to attach the wings to the cone of the rocket

Ìý

  • Now to make a launch pad for your rocket: Rip your coloured tissue paper into strips and stick them to a fresh paper cup

Ìý

  • Grab your rocket and ask a grown-up to help you make four small cuts in the base

Ìý

  • Place your rubber band into these cuts to make a criss-cross pattern – ask a grown-up for help as it’s a bit tricky!

Ìý

  • Put your launch pad on a flat surface table and put your rocket cup on top of it

  • Pull your rocket down and watch it blast off into space!
