The Cystic Fibrosis Trust is the only UK-wide charity dedicated to fighting for a life unlimited by CF, investing in cutting-edge research, driving up standards of care and ultimately beating CF for good.

Radio 4 listeners generously donated £7,324 to our appeal back in June which took place during CF Week 2018. Thanks to Radio 4 listeners, the Cystic Fibrosis Trust will be able to continue supporting cutting-edge research into new treatments, to bring hope to thousands of families living with CF in the UK.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is one of the UK’s most common life-limiting genetic conditions. It slowly destroys the lungs and digestive system and every day involves a gruelling regime of treatment and physiotherapy, just to stay well. There is no cure for CF and last year half of those who lost their life to CF were under 31 years old.

Thanks to generous supporters like the Radio 4 listeners, the Trust is supporting a new research programme at Imperial College London which will investigate better ways to detect Pseudomonas infections and develop more effective drugs for treating it. Around two in three adults with CF have persistent Pseudomonas chest infections, which can lead to declining lung function, permanent lung damage, and ultimately death. Detecting Pseudomonas quicker is an important goal, as the sooner it is detected, the easier it is to treat.

This new research programme led by Professor Jane Davies at Imperial College London, brings together a unique group of world-class scientists to explore detecting, understanding and treating Pseudomonas infections. The impact of this research will be felt by the global CF community.
