Leukaemia Care are offering free training to GPs because early diagnosis of leukaemia improves outcomes and saves lives.”

Radio 4 listeners generously donated over £6,295 to Leukaemia Care’s 大象传媒 Radio 4 charity appeal which took place in September during Blood Cancer Awareness Month.

Leukaemia affects people of all ages and with both quickly progressing (acute) and incurable, chronic leukaemia types, the experience of patients can differ hugely and there are a wide range of issues that patients face. From the emotional impact of a diagnosis, to physical effects of the blood cancer or treatment, or the wider practical implications on employment or finances.

Thanks to Radio 4 listeners, Leukaemia Care will be able to use this money to advise and support leukaemia patients and their families across the UK, as well as help to educate healthcare professionals (like GPs) about the signs and symptoms of leukaemia.

The symptoms of leukaemia are notoriously difficult to spot and often mimic other common illnesses like the flu. This is made even more complicated when on average a typical GP will only see one case of leukaemia every 3 to 4 years.

Leukaemia Care offers free training to GPs, it costs around £65 to train a GP online with interactive materials or £125 for a one-day face to face training course. With the generous donations from the Radio 4 appeal we can continue in our efforts to support patients and educate healthcare professionals.
